Description

Iceland is one of the world’s most incredible destinations, largely due to its jaw-dropping natural landscape. It has everything from lava fields to glaciers.

How do you even decide what’s worth seeing among volcanoes, geysers, waterfalls, hot springs, basalt columns, massive rifts, glaciers, lagoons, and mud pools? Where to sleep at night, and what to eat along the way? When’s the best time of year to dodge the harsh days so the kids can fully enjoy the adventure? On a trip like this, local know-how is essential to make sure the family vacation isn’t all about questions and wrong turns, but instead packed with unforgettable experiences and exciting adventures.

GoBeyond’s answer to these questions is a campervan road trip around Iceland, which is an epic experience for kids just for the campervan and camping alone. Plus, Iceland is one of the safest countries in the world, so you can confidently bring the kids along. Nothing proves this better than the Icelandic police’s social media page, where 90% of posts are about rescuing animals. The tour is led by a guide with deep local knowledge, who’ll show you not only the famous sights but also hidden gems and secret spots that are especially fascinating for the kids.

Our campervan is a converted minibus equipped with heating, a table, chairs, a kitchen, a bed, and bedding. If you’re hitting the road in this camper, you’ll enjoy the spontaneity of a backpacking adventure with the comfort of a hotel. There’s always a cozy spot to retreat to when you need it, and after a long, adventurous day, you can relax in a warm bed with the kids, talking about the day’s experiences and the adventures still to come.

It’s important to be flexible when touring Iceland. Your tour guides will keep an eye on the weather forecasts, and things can always be adapted if rain clouds make the existing plan tricky. In a country where it rains almost every day, the best kind of tour is one that can escape the clouds at a moment’s notice. In Iceland, forward thinking and planning are super important, when it comes to keeping the reins on our budget too. One of the ways we keep the cost of our tour affordable is by shopping local ingredients together and cooking meals on our campervan’s grill. Surprisingly, there are some things in Iceland, which are actually cheaper than in other parts of the world. These include world-class lamb hearts, cod, crustaceans, lamb, and beef. For the more adventurous kids (and adults), there’s even a chance to try exotic dishes like traditional fermented shark!

Activities & sights

We’ll visit all of Iceland’s major attractions, and thanks to our guide, you'll also get to experience some hidden gems that are off the usual tourist path. The sight of geysers shooting water columns high into the air is an incredible spectacle that no child will forget. The bubbling mud pools and black sand beaches covered in volcanic ash create a magical landscape. Exploring lava tunnels is a real treasure hunt for the little ones, while spotting seals and arctic birds in their natural habitats offers a much more special experience than a biology class at home. The blue thermal baths provide relaxation for parents, and the kids will love splashing around in the warm water, while the volcanic valleys offer true geological adventures for them.

Program

8-day itinerary

DAY 1

Arrival, Reykjavík

Arrival at Keflavík Airport, pick up the cars. We spend the first night near Reykjavík or Borgarnes.

DAY 2

Akureyri (380 km)

We drive through the North-west part of the island almost in a single burst, with a stop half way to check out a beautiful canyon and relax, and grab a bite to eat.
Later we’ll visit a bit of the second “biggest” city, Akureyri before we spend the evening in a campsite next to it.

DAY 3

Fields of lava (120 km)

After a short morning visit in Akureyri we head towards the island’s maybe most spectacular waterfall and a surprisingly active volcanic valley, full of sulfurous eruptions, called Hverir. Here the world’s biggest geothermal plant is working close to an already cooled down lava field. During this day we also have the opportunity to go to a thermal bath with beautiful blue water. We finish the day on the shore of the Mývatn Lake.

DAY 4

Fishing village, fjords (220 km)

On the way to the east we visit several more waterfalls while getting to a small fishing village which gives the exact feeling of a Wes Anderson movie. After lunch we go for a short hike to a majestic waterfall among the fjords before spending the night in a campsite in one of the fishing villages.

DAY 5

Fjords & glaciers (350 km)

We have a long drive on beautiful roads acrossthe fjords while getting closer to the glaciers. During the day we visit a small village, Höfn and in the afternoon we continuously reach new and new astonishing spots and witness how the peeled off ice floes move into the ocean, while seals are chasing each other around. We finish the day with a hike to a viewpoint in the Skaftafell National Park, where we stay for the night as well.

DAY 6

Basalt columns, black beach, waterfalls (200 km)

In the south, we’ll check out Iceland’s most famous attractions, like the Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon and the basalt columns of Reynisfjara, where the black sandy beach is a completely different experience from typical sandy shores. The kids will love exploring this incredible sight, where they can build a lava castle instead of a sandcastle. After lunch, we’ll stop in Vík, then continue on to a few well-known and lesser-known waterfalls, including Skógafoss, which we’ll explore from both the outside and inside.

DAY 7

Golden Circle (220 km)

The last full day of the tour also offers spectacular sightseeing: after a visit to the breathtaking Seljalandsfoss waterfall, we head north to visit the Golden Circle attractions, including Thingvellir National Park, Gullfoss waterfall and the unique Geysir: the first geyser ever discovered and all the geysers in the world were named after it.

DAY 8

Reykjavík & goodbye (150 km)

In the morning we will pass through Reykjavík to buy the essential souvenirs. Depending on the mood of the team and the outbound flights’ departure time we might check out 1-2 spectacular spots while heading to drop off the vans before saying goodbye and going home with everlasting memories.

The program is subject to change at any times. The final itinerary depends on current weather conditions and the group’s skills and stamina.

    FAQ

This trip is primarily intended for families, couples and group of friends. If you want to join one of our trips on your own, contact us so we can find the best adventure tour for you.

Every van needs to have one driver with a normal driving license, and the driver needs to have good driving skills. Driving the van is the same as driving a large car. If needed, our guides will help out in eventual tight spots or when parking.

Very changeable weather, 8-13 ºC during the day, wind, rain, sunshine (anything can happen), 2-8 ºC in the night. We recommend bringing at least 2 seats of outdoor clothing, wind and waterproof clothing and footwear is a must. You should always have extra layers in your backpack during small hikes the weather can change very quickly. Our local guide is a weather specialist, so he will do everything to stay out of rain, but as the Icelandic saying goes “ there is no such thing as bad weather, only inadequate equipment”.

This trip is suitable for children who can handle car rides, occasional cool weather, and are captivated by the wonders of nature. The activities are diverse and visually striking, making them interesting for kids, not to mention that the experience of traveling in a camper van is an adventure in itself.

The breathtaking natural wonders, such as geysers, waterfalls, and volcanic landscapes, provide a fairy-tale experience for children. Numerous visitor centers offer interactive exhibits where they can learn even more about these extraordinary phenomena. The country's many hot springs, like the famous Blue Lagoon or the Myvatn Nature Baths, offer fantastic relaxation for everyone, not just adults. Additionally, wildlife watching programs, such as puffin or whale watching tours, create unforgettable moments for kids.

No worries. We handle the program schedule flexibly, taking into account the children's varying ages, personalities, and moods on any given day. Everyone is free to do what feels right and what they’re in the mood for.

Layering is key, as the weather can change frequently, even multiple times in a single day. It’s advisable to bring a waterproof and windproof jacket, warm sweaters, long pants, and waterproof shoes or boots to keep the kids comfortable and dry during the hikes. Wool base layers and comfortable, waterproof clothing are recommended, along with gloves and a balaclava-style hat.

You can easily find diapers and baby food for younger children at local grocery stores, such as larger supermarket chains like Bonus or Kronan. Almost every major city has such a store where a wide selection is available.

Iceland offers high-quality medical care, especially in larger cities where hospitals are available for emergency situations. In smaller towns and villages, there are usually medical clinics that provide basic care. In case of an accident or emergency, you should call the emergency hotline at 112. Travel insurance is also mandatory to cover any potential medical expenses.

Although our tour guide is not a natural-born Icelander, but knows the country inside out: a nature enthusiast who is a massive fan of Icelandic history and culture. She is prepared for every question and always has a Plan B if nature changes the plans.

Fully equipped cozy campervans for 2 people, 4* downtown hotel in Reykjavík.

Depending on spending habits your budget for the trip should range from €500-700. For reference, a meal in a restaurant is between €40-50, petrol for the trip will be approx. €250, entry to thermal bath is ~€40 in Mývatn – this is an optional program for the trip.

The local currency is the Icelandic króna (ISK). There is no need to change money at all, there are several ATMS, but in all of Iceland paying by card is the most popular method, actually there will be several places where you can only pay by card.

For Iceland most nationalities don’t need a visa.

Important parts of Icelandic cuisine are lamb, dairy, and fish. We will eat in some restaurants but mostly we will go shopping and prepare food in the vans and have grill parties at the campsites.
