Description

THE BIG CAT’S PAWS

The Lofoten Islands sit roughly in the middle of the northern region of Norway, facing the town of Bodø. Their name originates from the Nordic word ‘fotr’, signifying ‘foot’, as the islands’ shape resembled a lynx’s paw to those who named them.

Once home to inhabitants of a Viking realm, these islands remained secluded for millennia, enduring harsh natural elements while sustaining themselves primarily through fishing in one of the world’s most perilous seas. This isolation, coupled with its natural splendors and breathtaking vistas, has elevated Lofoten to a premier destination for outdoor sports enthusiasts.

THE LAND OF EXTREMES

The late summer here offers a unique experience compared to what we’re accustomed to: with pleasantly cool days extending into the night and a gentle temperature difference, evenings on the islands stretch out invitingly with reliably pleasant weather. With countless hiking trails to explore, the mountain peaks afford breathtaking views of the almost otherworldly landscape. When we’re not trekking through the peaks, we can paddle beneath cliffs adorned with seabirds or venture out on a boat for seal and whale watching in the fjords, if the team feels like it.

We’ll also have ample opportunity to immerse ourselves in the islands’ centuries-old fishing culture. Amidst the iconic red rorbu wooden huts, wind-dried cod forms the base of the local fish soup, a delicacy we won’t miss out on tasting, of course.

Program

DAY 1 - ARRIVAL

We arrive at Harstad/Narvik (EVE) airport, from where we take a private transfer to Svolvær. We will occupy our authentic Rorbu houses, have dinner and enjoy long daylight and Norwegian scenery.

DAY 2 - FISHING VILLAGES, FJORDS, MOUNTAIN PEAKS

After breakfast, we head south to conquer the iconic 448-metre-high Reinebringen, reached by 1978 stone steps, for the most spectacular panorama of the archipelago, with jagged mountains rising from narrow fjords. Along the way we pass several fishing villages, including Riene, considered one of the most beautiful in the world. Throughout the day, we will not only learn about the local fishermen's way of life, but also encounter the heritage of 1000 years of Viking culture.

DAY 3 - WHITE SANDY BEACHES AND MORE HIGH GROUND

On this day we cross most of Lofoten on the small bridges connecting the islands. We stop on the white sandy beach of Flakstad for a picnic lunch, soaking up the sun and the stunning scenery. The feeling of adventure is guaranteed with a splash in the turquoise waters of the bay. Onwards, we explore the iconic Kvalvika beach, both from above and up close. After a leisurely walk along the coast, we climb Ryten, one of Lofoten's popular hiking trails, for breathtaking views of Kvalvika beach. After an adventure-filled day, we'll rest up in a sauna floating on the water.

DAY 4 - PADDLING ON THE FJORDS

We start the day in Henningsvaer, the town which many people know from it's cliff-top football pitch. Throughout the fishing village, dozens of cod are drying on large wooden racks between colorful houses. Walking through the streets of this town, you pass countless craft shops, artisan bakeries and small art galleries. In the afternoon, we visit Haukland beach, voted one of Norway's best beaches, whose picturesque scenery we admire after a short walk from the top of Mannen Peak. Later, the group can kayak out to the fjords and enjoys the evening sunset from kayaks on the Norwegian Sea. To round off our adventurous day, we'll savour the dried fish we've been looking at during the day in a traditional fish soup.

DAY 5 - THE DEVIL'S GATE

On our last full day, we set off for another hike in the morning. Fløya is the mountain that rises above Svolvær, with Svolværgeita, a popular rock formation for rock climbers, as its highest peak. The 590-metre summit overlooks the harbour town of Svolvær and a row of rorbu houses, including our accommodation. Along the hiking trail, we also pass Djevelporten, also known as "The Devil's Gate", a huge rock trapped in a gorge. We spend the afternoon at sea again and if you feel like it, you can join the boat trip to Trollfjord. If we are lucky, we may see seals and killer whales during the tour!

DAY 6 - FAREWELL TO THE ISLANDS

After a short walk in Svolvær, we bid farewell to the postcard world and head home with everlasting memories and new friendships.

*We reserve the right to change the program. The final program schedule will depend on the weather and endurance of the team.

    Lofoten Outdoor Camp

    Q&A

Not at all! There are always people who come alone, so you will definitely make new friends. The hotel has rooms with 2 beds but if you prefer your own, single room without the company of your friendly group-mates, you can request this for an additonal fee, just let us know in the application form.

If you like hiking and trekking in the mountains, this is the camp for you! There's also kayaking and boating, but if you're not so keen, Lofoten is a top destination without them.

Variable, 10-15 °C during the day, rain, wind, sun (anything can happen), 10-12 °C at night. We recommend that you bring wind and waterproof clothing, hiking boots. An extra layer of clothing in your backpack can come in handy for shorter hikes, as the weather can change very quickly.

Our GoBeyond tour guide loves nature, has a keen eye for the weather and is a fan of Nordic cultures. She has the answer to every question and always has a plan B if weather interferes.

Other than dinners, there aren't many opportunities to spend money. You can make the most out of 200-300 EUR, but if you'd like to savor the excellent local food with the best drinks, we suggest an amount of 600 EUR, which will be more than sufficient.

You should choose an insurance which expands for the activities you’re planning to do. You should be aware that the blue EU health insurance card and the insurance of your bank card is not valid in most cases.

We will be staying in Norway the whole time, on the Lofoten archipelagos in the northern areas of the country, with the town of Svolvær serving as our base.

In the morning, you’ll get a buffet breakfast, from which you can take some sandwiches for the day and the hotel provides packaging for this, since it is a widespread custom in the region. In the city, there are exciting local restaurants, which we can visit in the evenings, or even enjoy cooking for ourselves all together. The Lofoten islands are full of fishing villages and are famous for their delicious cod, so count on experiencing some divine seafood!

    CHECK MORE ADVENTURE TOURS

Although we are passionate skiers, surfers and motorriders, we had to realize that there are other outdoor adventures that cannot be missed.

Just think about dog sledding in the Arctic under the Northern Lights or driving around in motorhomes from hot spring to hot spring in Iceland or Japan.

We are constantly on the lookout for great outdoor adventures, but if you don’t find here what you are looking for, we are happy to organize whatever comes to your mind.
