Description

Few cities blur the line between urban life and wilderness like Cape Town. Table Mountain rises above the streets, the Atlantic crashes into a coastline of beaches and dramatic cliffs, and some of South Africa’s richest natural and cultural experiences sit within reach of the city. This trip is our way of discovering Cape Town beyond the postcard views: through the mountains, ocean, neighbourhoods, food and people that give it its character.

The adventure keeps changing pace. We climb above the city on Lion’s Head and Table Mountain, dive beneath the Atlantic into the Great African Sea Forest, follow the wild coastline of the Cape Peninsula and step into the surf culture of Muizenberg. In between, there are beaches, local flavours, neighbourhood walks and slower moments by the ocean, so the journey never feels like one long physical challenge.

The landscape is never just a backdrop here. One moment we are hiking through fynbos-covered mountain trails above the city, the next we are travelling along rocky headlands and coastal roads, or dropping below the surface of the Atlantic among kelp forests, fish, octopus and smaller shark species. We experience Cape Town’s wild side from completely different angles: from the trails, from the road, from the beach and from the water itself.

The Mother City is much more than its landscape. Through local guides, food and the communities we visit, we get closer to the stories, contrasts and everyday life that have shaped the city and still give its neighbourhoods their distinct character today. Then we leave the coast behind for a completely different side of the Western Cape: the open landscapes of the Karoo, where an overnight safari brings us face to face with African wildlife beneath vast, star-filled skies.

For the final days of the trip, we return to the ocean and settle into Kalk Bay, where we pick up the rhythm of the sea. Mornings can begin with surf, cafés and salty air, while fishing boats return to the harbour and the mountains rise behind the village. By the end of the journey, Cape Town no longer feels like a collection of famous attractions, but like a place we have hiked, swum, snorkelled, surfed, tasted and lived for a while. That is what this adventure is about: experiencing the Mother City rather than simply visiting it.

Accommodation

For the first 6 nights, we're based in Green Point, right in the middle of everything Cape Town has to offer. Our accommodation offers a relaxed, social atmosphere with a pool, comfortable common areas and plenty of space to unwind after active days. The city centre, Waterfront, restaurants, cafés and Atlantic Seaboard are all within easy reach.

For one night, we leave the city behind and head into the Karoo for a completely different experience. Surrounded by open landscapes and wildlife, our safari lodge offers pools, viewing areas and space to relax between game drives. Spa facilities are also available at an additional cost.

The final 3 nights are spent in Kalk Bay, one of Cape Town's quieter seaside neighbourhoods. Our guesthouse is a restored, 120-year-old house overlooking Kalk Bay harbour, with a pool and close to surf spots, cafés, bakeries, galleries, fresh seafood and the harbour itself, creating a slower coastal rhythm for the final part of the trip.

The programme combines hiking, ocean activities, wildlife, culture and city exploration. We hike Lion’s Head and Table Mountain, snorkel in the kelp forest, explore the Cape Peninsula, experience local food and neighbourhoods, and go on safari. We close the trip beside the ocean, at a slower pace, with optional surfing, kayaking and other activities.

No previous surfing, snorkelling or kayaking experience is required. Specialist guides join us for selected activities, while the GoBeyond guide stays with the group throughout the entire journey.

A good general level of fitness is required. Expect plenty of walking and two intermediate hiking days, with the longest hikes lasting approximately 6 hours.

Late February and early March fall at the end of Cape Town’s summer, with generally warm, dry and sunny conditions. Daytime temperatures are typically around 24–30°C, while evenings and early mornings can cool to around 15–18°C. Inland in the Karoo, daytime temperatures can climb above 30°C, with a noticeably cooler feel after sunset.

The weather can change quickly around the mountains and coast, and strong wind is part of life in the Cape. We recommend preparing for warm sunshine as well as cooler, windy conditions, particularly during hikes and ocean activities. A few extra long-sleeved layers are recommended for evenings and cooler days.

Maximum 12 guests per group.

Throughout the journey, the group is accompanied by a GoBeyond guide and the same experienced Cape Town driver. Specialist local guides join us for selected activities, giving us deeper insight into the places and communities we visit.

We make high-quality content of all our camps, which you will receive after returning home to remember all the amazing memories.

The local currency is the South African Rand (ZAR). Cards are widely accepted throughout Cape Town, although keeping a small amount of cash is useful for markets, local transport and smaller businesses.

Breakfast is included every day, and dinner is included during our night at the safari lodge.

Lunches and other dinners are not included, giving us the freedom to explore Cape Town’s huge variety of restaurants, cafés, markets and local food spots. At our Green Point accommodation, guests can also use the kitchen facilities, and additional experiences such as traditional braai evenings or private Cape Malay and Durban-style dinners may be arranged at an extra cost.

Muizenberg is one of Cape Town’s most beginner-friendly surf spots, with a sandy bottom and generally forgiving waves that make it suitable for first-timers as well as more experienced surfers.
In late February and early March, the water in False Bay is relatively mild by Cape Town standards, with March temperatures averaging around 18°C, so a wetsuit is still strongly recommended.
Surf conditions depend on swell, wind and tide, so the exact timing of our surf session may change to give the group the best possible conditions. Lessons and board/wetsuit rental can be arranged locally for an additional cost, and no previous surfing experience is required.

Private transport is included for the scheduled programme, and we travel with the same driver throughout the trip.

During free time, Uber is widely available and an easy way to get around Cape Town. Around False Bay, the coastal train also provides a scenic way to travel between several seaside neighbourhoods.

As in any major city, a little awareness goes a long way. Keep valuables out of sight, avoid leaving belongings unattended or in vehicles, and use Uber or arranged transport after dark when needed. Throughout the trip, follow the advice of the GoBeyond team and local guides.

Comprehensive travel insurance valid in South Africa is required. It should cover the outdoor and water-based activities you plan to participate in during the trip.

Program

11-day itinerary

Once we land in Cape Town, our private transfer takes us to our base in Green Point, close to the city centre, the Atlantic Seaboard and the Waterfront.

Once everyone has settled in, we ease into Cape Town life with a trip to Clifton Beach. There is time to stretch the legs, enjoy the Atlantic coastline and, for anyone feeling brave after the flight, jump into the ocean for our first Cape Town plunge (expect it to be cold).

Nothing too serious yet. We acclimatize, meet the group and get our first taste of the city before the adventure properly begins the next morning. We toast to it over dinner.

We start properly with one of Cape Town's signature hikes, Lion's Head. The trail climbs above the city with increasingly wide views across Table Mountain, the Atlantic coastline and the city below, giving us the first proper look at the landscape we'll be exploring over the coming days.

After the hike and some time to recharge, we shift from nature into the city's cultural side with a guided walk through Bo-Kaap. Behind its colourful streets is a neighbourhood with a rich history, strong community identity and an important place in Cape Town's story, which we explore with a local guide.

If the weather is good and the group still has energy, Signal Hill stays open as an optional sunset stop to finish the day above the Atlantic.

The morning takes us below the surface of False Bay for one of the most unusual experiences of the trip: snorkelling in the Great African Sea Forest. With all equipment provided and a specialist guide leading the way, we move through giant kelp in search of octopus, colourful fish and some of the Cape’s smaller shark species, including pyjama and shysharks.

After drying off and heading back toward the city, the adventure continues through food. In the afternoon, we join a Cape Town culinary tour, tasting our way through different parts of the city while discovering the people, flavours and stories behind its diverse food culture.

By the end of the day, we will have experienced Cape Town in two of the best ways possible: in the water and around the table.

Today we head out for a full-day journey around the Cape Peninsula, where mountains, ocean and some of the Cape's most dramatic roads come together.

We make our way south towards the Cape of Good Hope, stopping along the route to take in beaches, viewpoints and the constantly changing coastline. Later, we loop back toward Cape Town via Chapman's Peak Drive, carved into the mountainside high above the Atlantic.

There's plenty of time to stop, explore and let the peninsula's wild side set the pace for the day.

Today we slow the pace and look beneath the surface of the city. We begin around De Waterkant, one of Cape Town's oldest inner-city neighbourhoods, before continuing to the District Six Museum to understand a chapter of the city's history that still shapes Cape Town today.

Later, we join a guided township experience, where local stories, everyday life and community perspectives add another layer to what we have already seen. Rather than treating these places as separate attractions, the day is about understanding the contrasts that exist side by side across Cape Town.

After several active days, this also gives the body a break, a slower day built around listening rather than moving.

Today we take on the big one: Table Mountain. We hike up via Platteklip Gorge, steadily climbing above the city until we reach the broad summit.

Once on top, there is time to explore, take in the Atlantic, city and peninsula below, and enjoy the feeling of having earned the view before taking the cableway back down.

The afternoon is deliberately slower, with time to reset around Camps Bay and enjoy the beach after the hike. If the timing and programme allow, Boschendal Night Market can be added as an optional evening outing.

After a slower morning and late check-out, we leave Cape Town behind and head inland toward the Karoo, where the landscape opens up and the rhythm of the trip changes completely.

On the way, we stop around the Paarl area for a short break before continuing to our safari lodge. By the afternoon, we swap city streets and coastline for open bush, wide horizons and our first game drive.

The evening is all about settling into the reserve, enjoying dinner at the lodge and taking in the stillness of the Karoo after dark.

We wake up in the bush for an early morning safari, when the reserve is quiet and wildlife is often at its most active. After breakfast, we leave the Karoo behind and begin the journey back toward Cape Town.

On the way, we stop at Spice Route in Paarl for lunch, with time to explore some of the local delicacies, tastings and artisan producers before continuing south toward False Bay.

By late afternoon, we check into our new base in Kalk Bay, trading the dry inland landscape for ocean views, colourful streets and a completely different coastal rhythm for the final part of the trip.

We start the day in Muizenberg, one of Cape Town’s best-known surf neighbourhoods and an ideal place to get into the water, whether you are trying surfing for the first time or already have experience.

After the session, we make our way back along False Bay to Kalk Bay, where the pace slows down. The afternoon is for exploring the harbour, independent shops, cafés and galleries, with plenty of opportunities for fresh seafood and time by the ocean.

If conditions are good and there is still energy left, a second surf session can be added later in the day.

Today we head further south to Simon’s Town, a historic naval town where colourful streets, harbour life and the surrounding coastline create a laid-back seaside atmosphere.

The main stop is Boulders Beach, home to a protected colony of African penguins, where we can see them moving between the granite boulders, beach and water at close range.

The rest of the day stays deliberately flexible. Depending on the weather and conditions, there is time for swimming, kayaking, another surf session or simply enjoying the coastline and Simon’s Town at a slower pace before heading back to our accommodation.

We take the last day at an easier pace: exploring the V&A Waterfront, picking up any last souvenirs, and having lunch together before saying goodbye to Cape Town.

Transfers take everyone to the airport according to their individual flights, and we head home richer with experiences that will stay with us for a lifetime.

The program is subject to change at any times. The final itinerary depends on current weather conditions and the preferences of the group.

FAQ

Not at all. In fact, most people join our trips solo, and the shared adventures always bring the group together quickly.

The trip package price is calculated based on two people sharing the accommodation. If you would like to join the trip solo but are happy to share with someone, let us know, and we will do our best to find you a travel companion.

However, if there is no other traveller you can share with, or if you prefer to be on your own, you will need to calculate with the private room supplement.

It depends on your nationality. Most nationalities can stay in the Republic of South Africa for up to 30-90 days without a visa. Please make sure to always check the local regulations on the website of your country’s embassy.

We stay between the borders of South Africa for the whole trip.

You should have a good general level of fitness and be comfortable with plenty of walking. The trip includes two intermediate hikes, with the longest hiking days lasting around 4–6 hours. You do not need to be an experienced hiker, but arriving reasonably active will make the adventure much more enjoyable.

Basic swimming skills are required for the water-based activities, but not for joining the trip itself. If you cannot swim or do not feel comfortable in the water, that is absolutely not a reason to miss the adventure. We can arrange alternative activities while the rest of the group is in the water.

The GoBeyond guide accompanying the group throughout the trip is also a certified lifeguard, while specialist guides lead the organised water activities.

No. All three can be enjoyed by beginners, and specialist local guides will support us during the organised activities. Surf lessons can be arranged for an additional cost if you are completely new to surfing.

That is absolutely fine. Cape Town gives us plenty of alternatives, so if you prefer to sit out a hike, surf session or another activity, we will help you find another way to enjoy the day.

Flexibility is part of travelling in Cape Town. Wind, swell and mountain conditions can change quickly, so we may swap activities or adjust the timing of certain days. The programme is designed with enough variety to help us make the most of the best conditions available.

When traveling to South Africa, hygiene conditions are generally better than in other parts of Africa, so the risk of stomach problems are lower. However, it is still advisable to drink bottled water and bring hand sanitizer with you.

A GoBeyond guide accompanies the group throughout the entire journey. We also travel with the same experienced Cape Town driver, whose local knowledge is an important part of the trip. Specialist guides join us for selected experiences such as cultural tours, food experiences and kelp forest snorkelling.

It helps to travel smart. Cape Town is an incredible city, but like many major destinations, some areas require more awareness than others.

Throughout the trip, we stay in well-known areas and move around with our GoBeyond guide, trusted local specialists and the same experienced Cape Town driver. When exploring independently, we recommend using reliable transport after dark, sticking to busy areas and keeping valuables discreet.

Cape Town can be enjoyed safely, but good judgement and local advice matter.

Please ask your local health advisor. Usually there are no mandatory vaccinations, but the recommended ones are: Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, typhoid, DPT, Meningitis.

Depending on your spending habits, plan for a daily budget of approximately €50–100 on this trip.

The official currency is the South African Rand (ZAR). You can exchange money upon arrival at the airport or in the city. ATMs are widespread, and bank cards generally work without issues in most places. However, in rural towns, smaller shops, markets, and petrol stations, cash may be required, so it’s advisable to always carry some rand with you.

Cape Town is one of the best places in South Africa to eat well. The city’s food scene reflects its mix of cultures, with everything from Cape Malay flavours and curries to braai, fresh seafood, excellent meat, bakeries, cafés and modern restaurants.

Breakfast is included every day, and dinner is included during our night at the safari lodge. Lunches and most dinners are left open so we can explore different places along the way rather than eating from a fixed group menu every night.

We also have a Cape Town food tour included in the programme, so one day is dedicated to discovering the city through its flavours and stories. There will be options for different budgets, and the areas where we stay have plenty of good-quality restaurants within easy reach.

Yes. Alcohol is widely available in Cape Town, and there will be plenty of opportunities to enjoy local wine, craft beer or a drink with dinner.

For safety, we keep alcohol for after the day’s activities are finished, especially on hiking, surfing, snorkelling and safari days. As always, we expect everyone to drink responsibly and follow the guidance of the GoBeyond team.

We stay in three very different settings during the trip: 6 nights at a social, well-located base in Green Point, close to central Cape Town and the Atlantic Seaboard; 1 night at a safari lodge in the Karoo; and 3 nights at a restored, 120-year-old guesthouse in Kalk Bay overlooking the harbour, with a pool. Breakfast is included every day, with dinner also included during our night at the safari lodge.

You will need comprehensive travel insurance that is valid in South Africa and covers the adventure activities you plan to take part in, including hiking, surfing, snorkelling and kayaking. GoBeyond’s surf trips similarly require insurance that specifically covers surfing-related accidents.

We also recommend checking that your policy includes medical treatment, emergency assistance and medical evacuation.

Cape Town has access to high-quality private healthcare, but treatment can be expensive, which is another reason comprehensive travel insurance is essential. Your GoBeyond guide will be with the group throughout the trip and can assist with arranging medical help if needed.

Yes. Wi-Fi is available at our accommodations, and mobile coverage is generally very good throughout Cape Town and along most of our route. South Africa has extensive 4G/LTE coverage, including across the Western Cape.

During the safari and while travelling through more remote parts of the Karoo, reception may occasionally be weaker or unavailable for short periods. Otherwise, staying connected should not be a problem.
