Description

This tour is perfect for surfers and those eager to learn, but it’s also ideal for anyone wanting to explore the unique attractions and experiences Sri Lanka has to offer. Spending the last days of the year on a tropical island only makes the experience even more special.

Sri Lanka is famous for its tea plantations, its stunning rain forests, and its sandy beaches. But, there are also two distinct historical flavors that have left a lasting mark on the island: one is the colonial architecture, the other is thousands of years of Buddhist culture that continues to inspire the decorative flair of the island.

But it’s Sri Lanka’s natural landscape that makes this island country especially interesting. Along the way, we visit a national park where we’ll spot elephants, bears and even crocodiles. Another day we jump on a boat and head out whale watching, perhaps even spotting dolphins from right up close. We also visit a local turtle farm, where baby turtles are raised before being released back into the ocean.

Of course the itinerary won’t be too packed. We want to leave plenty of time to soak up the unique experiences Sri Lanka has to offer, even in our down-time. Take your time sipping coconut water on the beach, or sit back and relax with a cold beer in hand as the sun sets and the year slowly comes to an end.

And if you’d like to get to know the island even better, join us for the 5-day extension — an adventure into the mountains, we set off on an adventure into the mountains to discover another side of the island. Jungle-covered hillsides, world-famous tea plantations, the iconic train journey through the mountains, colonial architecture, nature, hiking, and yoga – and finally, we crown it all with one last sunset by the ocean.

Accommodation

8 nights in a panoramic boutique villa in the heart of Ahangama’s surf scene. The ocean is just across the road with some of the area’s best surf spots, while cafés and restaurants are only a short walk or tuk-tuk ride away.

Bright, air-conditioned double or twin rooms await, each with an open bathroom, a comfortable bed, and all the little details that help you settle into the rhythm of island life. The pool is the perfect place for slow mornings and post-surf relaxation. The rooftop terrace is where long breakfasts and sunset conversations over dinner happen and on New Year’s Eve, this is where we welcome the year with a proper rooftop house party.

Of course, as we are on a tropical island, the camp is not just about polishing our surf skills, but also about exploring the area. We visit a tea plantation to taste the local teas. We take a boat trip on Lake Koggala and visit Galle, famous for its unique colonial architecture. We visit Hiriketaya and an ancient Buddhist temple on top of the Mulkirigala cliff. Depending on the mood of the group, we will go on safari, whale and dolphin watching or visit baby turtles, and in the evenings we will immerse ourselves in the vibrant nightlife around a campfire on the beach or in the jungle.

Daily surf lessons with professional English-speaking instructors, in small groups organised by skill level from total beginners to advanced surfers. Each day includes a 90-minute lesson, with surf spots chosen based on the conditions and the group’s level, from the reef breaks of Ahangama to the beach waves of Kabalana.

You receive personalised coaching with a maximum of 3 guests per instructor, helping you choose the right waves and boards as you progress. A wide selection of surfboards and rash guards is included, and transport is provided to nearby surf spots when needed. If you wish, you can rent a board after the lessons, so you can keep practising whenever the waves look too good to resist.

Warm tropical climate, plenty of sunshine, 27–31°C air temperature and 27–29°C water temperature. Make sure to bring high SPF sunscreen and a lycra (UV protective) surf shirt.

Maximum 20 people, usually different nationalities. You can join solo, with friends, or as a couple, whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced surfer.

This camp is for adults only. If you’re travelling with children, we’re happy to help you find the trip that works best for your family.

We make high-quality content in all our camps. You will receive the photos after returning home to remember all the amazing memories.

The local currency is the Sri Lanka Rupee LKR. We recommend bringing USD in cash and to exchange at the airport. Depending on spending habits your budget for the trip should range from 300-600 USD. For reference, a meal is between 3-15 USD.

The food scene in Sri Lanka is thriving with amazing local produce. Hawker stalls, casual and fancy restaurants everywhere. Seaside lunches and gourmet dinner feasts. Healthy local organic breakfasts and 6 dinners are included in the price.

The ocean is warm and crystal clear, with consistent, friendly waves perfect for all levels. Right outside our hotel you’ll find the nearest surf break, plus over a dozen more within a 5 km stretch, ranging from gentle beginner beach breaks to challenging reef waves and world-class surf spots.

Comfortable, air-conditioned minibuses will transport us from the airport to our accommodation and back at the end of the camp, which is included in the price. Transport to the surf lessons with tuktuks is also included and organised by us. For the optional day programs and evening outings, transportation is arranged by tuk-tuks, which we organise together and cover the cost individually.

You will need an insurance that covers surfing accidents. You can contact us and we are happy to recommend the most suitable one.

One of the best holidays of my life! Smooth pre-communication with the organizing team, seamless arrival on the other side of the world, wonderful accommodation, divine weather, flawless organization. I arrived alone in Sri Lanka and left with 8 new friends. The island is a perfect blend of local culture experiences and western restaurants and cafes. I was surrounded by beautiful, kind people and even learned to surf a bit 🙂 Same place, next year!

Diana

I loved the balance between modern/fancy places and local things. I loved everything, really!
10/10 holiday. I had a really, really good time.

David

I liked everything, without exaggeration! The hikes, the sports, the accommodation, the company and Sri Lanka itself. 🙂 The camp could be two weeks. 🙂

Judith

Very well organized holiday. The lodge in Sri Lanka, Kabalana was also perfect where we stayed.
Our tourguide Gaspar was very friendly and flexible to our needs. The surf instructors were also friendly and professional.
I will for sure take part in one of the other adventures of GoBeyond in the near future as it was really beyond the standard.

GoBeyond | Surf Camp | Sri Lanka

The group meets at the airport, followed by a 2.5-hour private transfer to the villa. After check-in we take some time to settle in and unwind with a gentle yoga stretch after the long journey. Once everyone has had a chance to get to know each other and the place, we gather for our first dinner together, with good food and a few drinks to kick off the week.

GoBeyond | Surf Camp | Sri Lanka

After breakfast we head out for the morning surf lesson, followed by a short surf theory session where we break down what happened in the water and pick up a few tips for the next session.

The afternoon is free to relax by the pool, explore Ahangama, or paddle out again for an optional free surf. In the evening we head into town for dinner together, and if the mood is right, the night might continue with a few drinks and a bit of dancing.

GoBeyond | Surf Camp | Sri Lanka

Breakfast and a morning surf session to start the day right. After lunch we head out to explore Lake Koggala and visit a local turtle sanctuary, where rescued turtles are cared for before being released back into the ocean.

In the evening we gather for dinner at home on the rooftop, then head out to the beach for a few drinks and a night out together.

GoBeyond | Surf Camp | Sri Lanka

After the morning surf we head inland to visit a tea plantation and see how Sri Lanka’s famous tea is grown and processed. In the afternoon we slow things down with a relaxed yoga session to stretch out after the waves.

Since it’s New Year’s Eve, the day is all about ending the year the right way - a bit of surf, a bit of culture, and plenty of good moments. In the evening we gather back at the accommodation for dinner, and celebrate the night with a rooftop house party.

We start the first day of the year the best way we know – with a morning surf session. After lunch we head to Galle, where we wander through the old fort and explore its colonial streets and seaside walls.

On the way back we stop at the Japanese Peace Pagoda, a hilltop temple overlooking the ocean. In the evening we return to the accommodation for dinner.

Today we take a break from surfing and leave the day open for optional adventures. You can join a whale watching trip, head out on a safari to spot elephants and other wildlife, enjoy a relaxing massage or take a day trip to Hiriketiya to explore one of the most beautiful bays on the south coast. Of course, you can also simply spend the day unwinding back at the accommodation.

GoBeyond | Surf Camp | Sri Lanka

We start the day with a morning surf session to make the most of the waves.

Afterwards we head to the Weligama fish market for lunch, where you can experience the fresh local catch of the day. In the afternoon we gather for a surf theory session, breaking down techniques and what we’ve learned in the water.

In the evening we return to the accommodation for dinner at home and a relaxed night together.

GoBeyond | Surf Camp | Sri Lanka

We start the day with the last surf session of the trip, making the most of the waves one final time. Afterwards there’s time to relax and stretch out with a yoga session.

Later we head to Mirissa, where we gather for a farewell dinner at one of our favorite spots celebrating our week together over great food and ocean views.

GoBeyond | Surf Camp | Sri Lanka

We start our final day with a group meal. Checkout from the hotel is around noon, then we head to the airport and return home with amazing new memories.

Alternatively, those who wish can extend their stay and spend an additional 4 nights on the island with us on our optional adventure add-on.

For those who prefer to stay longer, we organize a trip into the mountains to explore world-famous tea plantations. Here, we spend two nights at a secluded organic farm producing the highest quality artisanal tea. We go hiking, practice yoga, and attend cooking and tea classes.

On the third morning, we board a train and spend half a day travelling through tea plantations on the world's most beautiful railway line. In Nuwara Eliya, the capital of the Sri Lankan highlands at 1,868 meters, we stay in an elegant, colonial-style grand hotel. Finally we visit an ethical elephant orphanage on the way back to our beachfront hotel near the airport for our last night before flying home.

FAQ

Sure thing, at least half of the group always consists of beginners. We have perfect conditions for beginners each year, and with the help of the professional instructors, you will be able to learn the basics very effectively.

During the daytime it’s sunny, around 27–31 °C, during the night it’s around 26–28 °C. The water is 28 °C. Board shorts, bikini, lycra (UV and rash protection) surf shirt is needed. Don’t forget the reef-safe suncream and your hat at home!

A GoBeyond tour guide and professional local instructors with many years of experience.

Sri Lanka offers the best beginners and intermediate waves. Most likely you won’t find stand up barrels, but there are also hollow waves breaking on shallow reefs and lots of forgiving and super fun reef breaks. If you’re not only focusing on very big waves and you’re not a pro, you will enjoy it!

We’re pretty sure that you’ll love surfing. In the same time the villages of Sri Lanka have a very chill vibe and enjoying the sun on a tropical beach is quite easy. On the other hand most of the group will surf at least half day every day, meaning we'll stay on the beach together going in and out of the water.

The private villa consists of stylish double or twin rooms, each with ocean views, light-filled rooms, air conditioning, and a private open-air bathroom. Common areas are just steps away from the beach and feature a swimming pool and a roofbar area.

Not at all. There are always people who come alone, so you can be sure that you’ll make new friends!

It depends on your spending habits, but you can get by comfortably on $50 a day. If you're doing all the optional activities and want to party, you should aim for $100 a day.

The local currency is Sri Lankan Rupees (LKR). We recommend bringing dollars in cash and exchanging only a small amount at the airport (around $100 max) when you arrive. Later in Ahangama you can exchange more money at some good local exchange spots that we know. There are also ATMs available, but they usually charge extra withdrawal fees. If you bring euros, it’s best to exchange the full amount at the airport.

In Ahangama you can pay by card at most restaurants, cafés, and bars, especially for dinners and drinks. Still, it’s good to keep some cash with you for roadside coconuts, fresh fruit stands, tuk-tuks, and small local shops.

It depends on your nationality, please always check it on your local embassy’s website. From most of the European countries, the price of the visa is $50 and you will need to fill out an online form before the arrival (http://www.eta.gov.lk/slvisa/).

Healthy fresh food, mostly based on seafood, chicken, rice and vegetables. You will get a buffet breakfast every morning and two community dinners. Coconuts are offered everywhere they are almost for free.

Tap water in Sri Lanka is OK for washing and brushing teeth, but it is not recommended for drinking. Bottled mineral water is cheap ($0.5) and available everywhere. Alternatively, there will be a purified water fountain at our surf hostel, where you can fill up your bottles and help keep plastic out of the ocean.

We cannot give official advice on vaccinations, as everyone's individual medical history, physical condition, etc. will determine what vaccinations they do or do not need. There is no mandatory vaccination.

There is an OK level of hygiene, no stomach infection has occurred in the last years as the foods are healthy and clean. It’s always a good idea to keep a hand sanitizer and/or a small bottle of spirit in your bag.
