Description

This tour is perfect for surfers and those eager to learn, but it’s also ideal for anyone wanting to explore the unique attractions and experiences Sri Lanka has to offer.

Sri Lanka is famous for its tea plantations, its stunning rain forests, and its sandy beaches. But, there are also two distinct historical flavors that have left a lasting mark on the island: one is the colonial architecture, the other is thousands of years of Buddhist culture that continues to inspire the decorative flair of the island.

But it’s Sri Lanka’s natural landscape that makes this island country especially interesting. Along the way, we visit Yala or Udawalawe National Park where we’ll spot elephants, bears and even crocodiles. On another day we jump on a boat and head out whale watching, perhaps even spot some dolphins from right up close. We also visit a local turtle farm, where baby turtles are raised.

Of course the itinerary won’t be too packed; we want to leave heaps of time to soak up the unique experiences that Sri Lanka has to offer even in our down-time. Take your time sipping coconut water on the beach, or sit back and relax while drinking beer on an uninhabited island.

Accommodation

8 nights in a dreamy oceanfront boutique surf camp tucked right into the heart of Sri Lanka’s surf scene at Ahangama Beach. Air-conditioned, light-filled rooms with soft beds and all the little things you need to truly relax.
The pool sits just steps from the ocean, surrounded by palm trees and a Tiki bar for slow mornings or post-surf siestas. The vibe is warm, open, and social, with a lush garden that rolls straight down to the beach. And when it’s time to explore, all the island’s highlights are just a quick tuk-tuk ride away.

Of course, as we are on a tropical island, the camp is not just about polishing our surfing skills, but also about exploring the area. We'll visit a tea plantation where we'll taste the teas. We take a boat trip on Lake Koggala and visit Galle, famous for its unique colonial architecture. We visit Hiriketaya and an ancient Buddhist temple on top of the Mulkirigala cliff. Depending on the mood of the group, we will go on safari, whale and dolphin watching or visit baby turtles, and in the evenings we will immerse ourselves in the vibrant nightlife around a campfire on the beach or in the jungle.

Daily surf lessons with professional English-speaking instructors in groups based on surfing skills (from total beginners to advanced). A wide variety of surfboards to choose from which you can use also after the surf lessons. Surf photo and video session with analysis.

Tropical climate, tons of sunshine, 28-35°C, water temperature, 26-29°C. Make sure to bring high FPS sunscreen and lycra (UV protective) surf shirt.

Maximum of 18 people usually of mixed nationalities. Solo travellers, groups of friends and couples with varying surfing skills and experience.

We make high-quality content in all our camps. You will receive the photos after returning home to remember all the amazing memories.

The local currency is the Sri Lanka Rupee LKR. We recommend bringing USD in cash and to exchange at the airport. Depending on spending habits your budget for the trip should range from 300-600 USD. For reference, a meal is between 3-15 USD.

The food scene in Sri Lanka is thriving with amazing local produce. Hawker stalls, casual and fancy restaurants everywhere. Seaside lunches and gourmet dinner feasts. Healthy local organic breakfasts and 5 dinners are included in the price.

The ocean is warm and crystal clear, with consistent, friendly waves perfect for all levels. Just a 2-minute walk from our home base, you’ll find the nearest surf break, plus over a dozen more within a 5 km stretch, ranging from gentle beginner beach breaks to challenging reef waves and world-class surf spots.

Comfortable, air-conditioned minibuses will transport us from the airport to our accommodation and back at the end of the camp, which is included in the price. Local transport for the surf lessons we organise is also included. For the optional day programs and evening outings, transportation is arranged by tuk-tuks, which we organise together and cover the cost individually.

You will need an insurance that covers surfing accidents. You can contact us and we are happy to recommend the most suitable one.

DAY 3

Breakfast, morning surf session, lunch at the accommodation. In the afternoon, we embark on a boat trip on Lake Koggala to see some wildlife and visit three different islands to meet the locals. We have dinner back at the accommodation and then head to Mirissa Beach for a bonfire party.

DAY 4

Galle

After the morning surf and lunch on the beach, the group can visit Galle in the afternoon, where we explore the castle and learn about colonial architecture. Dinner at the best fish restaurant in the area.

DAY 5

Theory & tea

Thanks to the experience we've gained so far, we'll have enough confidence to have photos and videos taken of our surfing skills, so you will surely have some nice memories to last. This session is followed by another theoretical lesson, then lunch, yoga and in the late afternoon we visit the famous tea plantation of Handunugoda. After dinner we analyse the footage we made during the morning session.

We head to the amazing Hiriketiya bay, where you can enjoy the beach and the waves. Then we hit an awesome lunch spot and head to Mulkirigala Rock Temple to learn about local culture. To finish up the day, we head to Midigama to let the steam out with a Cheeky Monkey Party.

DAY 7

Fish market

We start with the usual morning surf, then head to a secluded beach near Mirissa for some off-the-radar exploration as an optional adventure if the group is interested. After lunch at the Weligama fish market, we'll do yoga and surf again in the afternoon. We'll end the day with dinner at the Lighthouse and an epic ocean sunset.

DAY 8

Safari

Start the day with a morning surf session, followed by some well-earned chill time and an afternoon yoga session. Or, switch things up with an optional Uduwella safari or whale and dolphin watching excursion, depending on the group’s vibe. Our day ends in Weligama at an awesome tiki bar.

DAY 9

Departure

We start our final day with a group meal followed by optional massage and spa treatments. Checkout from the hotel is around noon, then we head to the airport and return home with amazing new memories.

I loved the balance between modern/fancy places and local things. I loved everything, really!
10/10 holiday. I had a really, really good time.

One of the best holidays of my life! Smooth pre-communication with the organizing team,
seamless arrival on the other side of the world, wonderful accommodation, divine weather, flawless organization.
I arrived alone in Sri Lanka and left with 8 new friends. The island is a perfect blend of local culture experiences
and western restaurants and cafes. I was surrounded by beautiful, kind people and even learned to surf a bit 🙂 Same place, next year!

Diana

I liked everything, without exaggeration! The hikes, the sports, the accommodation,
the company and Sri Lanka itself. 🙂 The camp could be two weeks. 🙂

    FAQ

Obviously yes, at least half of the group always consists of beginners. We have found perfect conditions for beginners each year, and with the help of the professional instructors, you will be able to learn the basics very effectively.

During the daytime it’s sunny, around 28-35 °C, during the night it’s around 28 °C. The water is 28 °C. Board short, bikini, lycra (UV and rash protection) surf shirt is needed. Don’t forget the reef-safe sunscreen and your hat at home!

A GoBeyond tour guide and professional local instructors with many years of experience.

Sri Lanka offers the best beginners and intermediate waves. Most likely you won’t find stand up barrels, but there are also hollow waves breaking on shallow reefs and lots of forgiving and super fun reef breaks. If you’re not only focusing on very big waves and you’re not a pro, you will enjoy it!

We’re pretty sure that you’ll love surfing. In the same time the villages of Sri Lanka have a very chill vibe and enjoying the sun on a tropical beach is quite easy. On the other hand most of the group will surf at least half day every day, meaning we'll stay on the beach together going in and out of the water.

The private villa consist of stylish double or twin rooms, each with ocean views, light-filled rooms, air conditioning, and a private bathroom. Common areas are just steps away from the beach and feature a swimming pool and bar area.

Not at all. There are always people who come alone, so you can be sure that you’ll make new friends!

It depends on your spending habits, but you can get by comfortably on $50 a day. If you're doing all the optional activities and want to party, you should aim for $100.

The local currency is Sri Lankan Rupees LKR. You can only change money in banks at the airport and some small shops with your passport. First, it’s recommended to change some money at the airport, then we’ll go to a bank if you run out. You can only pay by card at our surf house, there are a few atms but withdraws have large extra charges so we recommend using cash.

It depends on your nationality, please always check it on your local embassy’s website. From most of the European countries, the price of the visa is $50 and you will need to fill out an online form before the arrival (http://www.eta.gov.lk/slvisa/).

Healthy fresh food, mostly based on seafood, chicken, rice and vegetables. You will get a buffet breakfast every morning and two community dinners. Coconuts are offered everywhere they are almost for free.

Tap water in Sri Lanka is OK for washing and brushing teeth, but it is not recommended for drinking. Bottled mineral water is cheap ($0.5) and available everywhere. Alternatively, there will be a purified water fountain at our surf hostel, where you can fill up your bottles and help keep plastic out of the ocean.

We cannot give official advice on vaccinations, as everyone's individual medical history, physical condition, etc. will determine what vaccinations they do or do not need. There is no mandatory vaccination.

There is an OK level of hygiene, no stomach infection has occurred in the last years as the foods are healthy and clean. It’s always a good idea to keep a hand sanitizer and/or a small bottle of spirit in your bag.
