Description

In Japan, pop culture and ancient history coexist effortlessly: anime fans in costume and multi-storey gaming arcades stand side by side with quiet shrines, bamboo groves, rocky river valleys, and volcanic mountain ranges. Futuristic skyscrapers rise above traditional wooden houses, while everyday life blends high-tech comfort, with heated toilet seats, hot springs, geishas, and the legacy of samurais. Add world-class cuisine, and the experience becomes unforgettable. What truly makes the Land of the Rising Sun unique is how seamlessly its ancient traditions merge with hypermodern innovation and futuristic cities.”

On our driving experience, we explore the central region of Japan’s main island, Honshu, in sports coupes to discover this fascinating duality. We immerse ourselves in natural wonders and extraordinary cuisine, while also visiting the iconic achievements of Japan’s world-famous automotive and motorcycle industries at the Yamaha and Honda museums.

Leaving Tokyo behind, we say goodbye to its Blade Runner–like atmosphere and head toward the densely forested peaks of the Japanese Alps. Winding mountain roads guide us through narrow river valleys and scenic passes, past ancient Shinto shrines, spa towns built around volcanic hot springs, and authentic villages that still preserve the Edo-era heritage of samurais and merchants.

In the north, we reach the Sea of Japan, where we drive along the sandy shoreline before heading south past the country’s largest lake toward Kyoto and Nara. On the final stretch, we return to Tokyo along the Pacific coast, with Mount Fuji providing the perfect backdrop to close this unforgettable journey.

Accommodation

Over the course of 12 nights, we stay at 9 different accommodations, all in twin rooms. Our journey includes a mix of Japanese- and Western-style hotels in both small towns and large cities, as well as one night in an authentic, traditional Japanese house. On several evenings, we can unwind in natural hot springs after long days on the road, and we spend three to four nights sleeping on tatami mats. One evening offers views over Lake Suwa, and at the end of the tour we enjoy views of Lake Hamana. On our second-to-last night, we stay at a unique premium hotel located right next to the Fuji Speedway race track.

In total, we spend 3 nights in Tokyo at a centrally located Western-style hotel, 4 nights in distinctive 4–5-star hotels, 4 nights in Japanese-style onsen hotels, and 1 night in an authentic old Japanese house operated as an apartment, with classic paper walls.

10 days Japanese sports coupe rental tuned for driving pleasure (Toyota GR86 or similar) – subject to availability and individual preferences.

The tour is guided by GoBeyond tour leaders with many years of experience. Participation requires an international driving permit issued according to the Geneva Convention on Road Traffic.

In central Japan, May brings pleasant spring weather transitioning into early summer. City temperatures often rise above 25°C during the day, with evenings cooling to around 12–15°C. In the mountains, it’s slightly cooler, with daytime highs around 20–23°C and nighttime lows near 10°C. May is generally dry, though occasional rainfall can occur.

Over the 10 driving days, we cover approximately 2,000 km on high-quality paved roads, including a rest day in Kyoto. Driving on the left becomes second nature within a few days, and nowhere else in the world will you experience such patient and courteous traffic culture.

Depending on your spending habits, expect to budget around €800–1,200. Meals typically cost between €7 and €25. Cities tempt you to spend more, while the countryside is more budget-friendly – but if souvenirs are on your list, plan accordingly.

Over two weeks, we dive deep into Japanese cuisine. From rich ramen and fresh dumplings to authentic sushi and regional specialties like Nagano soba noodles. Breakfast is included, and one evening dinner is provided by the accommodation. Lunch stops are made along the way, and evenings are spent discovering local restaurants and izakayas. Expect vegetable-packed noodle soups, crispy tempura, fermented vegetables, tabletop grilling – and moments when we don’t even know exactly what we’re eating, but love it anyway.

Maximum of 14 group members, representing a mix of nationalities.

We make high-quality content in all our camps. You will receive the photos after returning home to remember all the amazing memories.

Comfortable airport transfers are provided at arrival and departure. Transportation within Tokyo and Kyoto is not included. Outside the cities, we travel exclusively by our rental cars.

You should choose an insurance that covers road traffic accidents and is valid in Japan. You can contact us and we will be happy to recommend the most suitable one.

Program

13-day itinerary

We arrive in Tokyo, where a transfer will be waiting for us at the airport, and the team will gather in Shinjuku. We acclimatize, recover from the long journey, and dive into Tokyo's vibrant nightlife.

After breakfast, we set off to explore the city. We visit one of Tokyo’s most important Shinto shrines, Meiji Jingu, before heading into the never-sleeping heart of Shibuya, where we of course experience the world’s most famous intersection. In the evening, we arrive in Shinjuku’s buzzing entertainment district, where the warm, lively atmosphere of traditional izakayas awaits.

After breakfast, we pick up our cars, say farewell to the world’s most populous metropolis, and head north. Along the way, we stop at the Honda Museum, home to an exhibition of nearly 350 cars and motorcycles showcasing the legendary brand’s most iconic machines. By evening, we arrive in a resort town set in a river valley, famous for its natural hot springs, where we leave the city noise behind and ease into the calm rhythm of the countryside.

Our first stop is Nikko, where we explore the famous shrine complex made up of 103 buildings, including the richly ornamented Toshogu Shrine – one of Japan’s most spectacular religious sites. Continuing along scenic mountain switchbacks, we head toward the volcanic peaks of the Japanese Alps, with river valleys, alpine lakes, and waterfalls unfolding along the way. By evening, we arrive in Kusatsu, a uniquely atmospheric spa town, where dinner awaits us at our accommodation, followed by a well-earned soak in the onsen after a long and rewarding day.

After breakfast, we head toward Nagano to visit the famous Zenko-ji Temple, before turning onto one of Japan’s most spectacular scenic roads: the Venus Line. The route winds through stunning mountain ranges and open highlands, past rivers, lakes, and waterfalls, eventually leading us to Lake Suwa.

Lake Suwa is not only the largest lake in Nagano Prefecture and a popular retreat, but also a place deeply woven into Japanese pop culture, appearing in films, anime, and video games. In the evening, we enjoy dinner at our lakeside hotel, unwind in the onsen, and take in the peaceful views over the water.

After breakfast, we get back behind the wheel and head northwest through volcano-shaped mountains toward the Sea of Japan. In the highlands, we arrive in Takayama, often regarded as the crown jewel of Gifu Prefecture, before continuing on to the mountain village of Ainokura, famous for its traditional gassho-style houses. By nightfall, we reach the coast and spend the night by the shores of the Sea of Japan.

We have breakfast at the market next to our accommodation and take a stroll around the harbor town, often called the Venice of Japan, with its unique atmosphere. We visit a 300-year-old home of an Edo-period seafaring family and a ceramic artist’s gallery. From here, we take a scenic drive out to the Noto Peninsula, then continue south along the west coast on Japan’s only stretch of shoreline where driving is possible directly beside the water on firm, sandy shore. We spend the evening in downtown Kanazawa, with our accommodation just a short walk from the historic district once home to samurai families.

In the morning, we continue our journey along the Sea of Japan, making stops at the most scenic parts of the coastline. From there, we turn inland and wind through mountains, valleys, forests, and towns until we reach Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan. Following the shoreline, castles, villages, cities, rivers, and dense forests pass by as we continue south, before crossing to the opposite side and arriving in Kyoto.

In Japan’s cultural capital, we check into our hotel and set out to begin exploring the city.

We take a rest day in Kyoto and visit the city’s key landmarks – at least those we can fit into one day. In the northern part of the city, we visit the famous Zen Buddhist Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku-ji) and the beautiful bamboo forest. In the afternoon, we head to the eastern side of the city. We visit the Imperial Palace, a symbol of Kyoto’s history, along with its expansive surrounding park. We also visit the Fushimi Inari Shrine, known for its striking orange torii gates made of cedar wood, which lead us through scenic walking paths. We wrap up this long sightseeing day with a visit to a downtown izakaya, where we relax and enjoy some local food.

After breakfast, we head to the ancient city of Nara, which was Japan's first permanent capital in the 8th century and boasts some of the country’s oldest temples. At Todai-ji Temple, we see the world’s largest bronze Buddha statue, standing at 15 meters high, and of course, we also visit the free-roaming deers in Nara Park. Next, we visit the nearby Horyuji Temple, built in 607. It is not only one of Japan’s oldest temples but also the world’s oldest surviving wooden structure. In the afternoon, we head east, circling around the Ise Bay, passing through Nagoya, and finally reaching Lake Hamana. We end the day by relaxing in the onsen at our lakeside hotel.

We start the day at the Yamaha Museum, exploring iconic pieces of Japanese car and motorcycle history, then continue to drive toward one of the country’s greatest symbols: Mount Fuji. We spend the evening in the famous lake district, just a few kilometers from the volcano, surrounded by a breathtaking natural landscape.

On our final driving day, we explore the area around Mount Fuji, including the region of the Five Lakes and nearby Hakone—one of Japan’s most beautiful landscapes, where steaming hot springs, historic trails, and crystal-clear lakes accompany us along the way. Before returning to the metropolis, we wind along the rims of ancient volcanic craters, taking in breathtaking panoramas of Mount Fuji, Mount Komagatake, and the surrounding lakes. In the afternoon, we arrive back in Tokyo, return the cars, and toast together in celebration of the incredible adventure we’ve shared.

We head to the airport by private transfer, with everyone departing according to their flight schedules. After two weeks of unforgettable adventures, we leave feeling pleasantly tired and with memories that will last a lifetime as we fly back home.

The program is subject to change at any times. The final itinerary depends on current weather conditions and the group’s skills.

    FAQ

Not at all, it’s easy to make new friends on the trip. However, the package price is based on two people sharing one car; so if you decide to join on your own, a single-driver car rental supplement applies.

Each car must have at least one experienced driver who holds an international driving permit issued under the Geneva Convention and is happy to drive 6–8 hours a day. If you like, it’s also possible to rotate multiple drivers. With left-hand traffic, it only takes a few days to get used to the local driving rules and culture—there’s really no other place in the world where drivers are as patient and considerate.

Japan only recognizes international driving permits (IDPs) issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic; those based on the 1968 Vienna Convention are not accepted. The international driving permit is valid for one year and must be presented together with your domestic driving license and passport. The driving license must be valid for passenger cars, and many rental companies require the license to be at least one year old.

In central Japan, May typically brings pleasant weather, transitioning from spring to early summer. In the cities, daytime temperatures usually rise to around 20–25°C, while evenings cool down to about 12–16°C. In the mountainous areas, the climate is slightly cooler, with daytime highs generally around 15–20°C and nighttime lows dropping to 8–12°C. May is wetter than the previous months: rainy days can occur, but the true rainy season usually does not start until June.

Depending on your spending habits, you should budget between €800 and €1,200. A meal costs between €7 and €25, but you can get away with spending less than that with good-quality ready meals and fresh food from shops. Of course, it's easy to spend more money in cities, while there are fewer opportunities in the countryside, but if you want to return home loaded with souvenirs, you should factor that in as well.

You need insurance that covers all traffic accidents and is valid in Japan.

We'll be staying in the central area of Japan's main island, Honshu.

Over the 13 days, we immerse ourselves in Japanese cuisine. Along the way, we enjoy rich ramen, fresh dumplings, and authentic sushi, and we taste regional specialties like soba noodles from Nagano. Breakfast is included in the package, and on one evening the accommodation also provides dinner for us. For lunch, we stop along the way, and in the evenings we head out to a local restaurant or izakaya in each city. Expect noodle soups packed with vegetables, crispy tempura, fermented vegetables, and table-grilling experiences. There are even moments when we don’t know exactly what we’re eating but we enjoy every bite.

Over 12 nights, we stay in 9 different accommodations, all in twin rooms. We sleep in both Japanese- and Western-style hotels, in small towns and big cities alike, and spend one night in an authentic, traditional Japanese house. On several evenings, we relax in thermal baths at the end of long days, and we spend three to four nights sleeping on tatami mats. One evening, we enjoy views over Lake Suwa, and toward the end of the trip we look out over Lake Hamana. On our second-to-last night, we stay in a unique premium hotel next to the Fuji Speedway race track.

In total, we spend 3 nights in Tokyo in a centrally located Western-style hotel, 4 nights in distinctive 4–5-star hotels with a special atmosphere, 4 nights in Japanese-style onsen hotels, and 1 night in an authentic old house.

The local currency is the Japanese Yen, JPY. There are many exchange offices and ATMs at the airport, but it is best to exchange small amounts of cash at the airport as you will be able to exchange it later in the city at a cheaper rate. You can use a card in many places, but surprisingly, there are still quite a few where you can’t, especially in rural areas. We recommend that you carry enough cash.

Travelers from many countries across the globe can visit Japan for up to 90 days without requiring a visa, but if you require one, we are happy to help! Check this link to see which countries require a visa: https://www.japan.travel/en/plan/visa-info/
