Description

Among the 4,000-metre peaks

The first turns of the season always set the tone for the winter ahead. Monte Rosa is the perfect place to get back into the rhythm, find your ski legs again, and kick off the season in one of the Alps’ most remarkable ski areas.

We stay in an authentic alpine village just next to Alagna Valsesia. With its centuries-old stone houses, narrow streets and relaxed pace of life, the village preserves the original atmosphere of the Italian Alps. Every morning we head to Alagna, where the lifts carry us from the valley into the alpine world of Monte Rosa in just a few minutes, surrounded by some of the highest peaks in the Alps.

One of the Alps’ Best-Kept Secrets

We ski across three connected resorts of Alagna, Gressoney and Champoluc, reaching elevations above 3,000 metres with just a handful of lifts. Glaciers, long descents and impressive vertical drops make Monte Rosa a paradise for skiers, yet it remains one of the Alps’ best-kept secrets. From the village, we’re above 3,000 metres in minutes, providing reliable snow conditions even at the very beginning of the season. The slopes stay surprisingly uncrowded throughout the winter, and in December it often feels as if you have the mountain almost entirely to yourself. Add outstanding mountain huts and classic Italian cuisine, and it’s easy to see why Monte Rosa is such a special place.

Get the ski legs ready

This weekend is all about preparing for the season ahead. We explore the best parts of the ski area, rebuild our confidence on snow and lay the foundations for the freeride season to come. The main focus is mountain safety, with evening workshops covering avalanche awareness and ski touring fundamentals. If conditions allow, we complement the theory with optional off-piste skiing.

But this weekend isn’t only about skiing. It’s also about discovering the Monte Rosa that begins beyond the marked pistes: local markets, family-run mountain huts and the slower rhythm of life in the Italian Alps. Empty slopes, memorable meals, a stylish alpine villa and the occasional Spritz Imperiale are all part of the experience.

DETAILS

Accommodation

We stay in a restored late 19th-century villa in one of the alpine villages of the Valsesia Valley. The spacious 2–4 person apartments provide a comfortable base for the weekend. Every morning we drive to Alagna, and every evening we return to cook together, share a drink and talk through the day's best runs. The villa fits perfectly into the surrounding villages, where centuries-old stone houses, quiet streets and the slower pace of alpine life still define everyday life.

Our base is Alagna Valsesia, one of the Alps' best-kept secrets, nestled at the foot of the Monte Rosa massif. From the village, just a handful of lifts take us above 3,000 metres, where glaciers, towering peaks and almost 2,000 metres of vertical await. Thanks to its high-altitude terrain, Monte Rosa offers reliable snow conditions even at the very beginning of the season, while its uncrowded slopes, authentic alpine atmosphere and timeless skiing culture make it feel worlds away from the Alps' busier resorts.

At the beginning of the season, snow conditions make all the difference, and it's hard to find a better place than Monte Rosa. Just a handful of lifts take us above 3,000 metres, while the three interconnected ski areas give us the flexibility to ski wherever the conditions are best each day.

High-altitude alpine climate with plenty of sunshine, changeable winter weather and temperatures ranging from -15°C to +5°C.

Monte Rosa isn't just about skiing. During the day, we can take a break at the panoramic mountain sauna, and in the evening there's always time for dinner in a family-run trattoria or a walk through the streets of Alagna. It doesn't take long to settle into the slower rhythm of the village, whether you're browsing the local market or ending the day with a glass of prosecco.

You need travel insurance that covers winter sports in Italy. If you join the optional freeride day, make sure your policy also covers off-piste skiing. If you're unsure which insurance is right for you, just get in touch—we're happy to help you find the best option.

The apartments come with fully equipped kitchens, so everyone starts the day at their own pace. Cook your own breakfast, walk to the local bakery for fresh pastries and coffee, or pick up a few things from the nearby grocery store. We usually stop at one of the mountain huts for lunch, and in the evenings, anyone who feels like it joins the group for dinner in one of the village's family-run trattorias.

This weekend isn't just about skiing. In the evenings, we cover the fundamentals of ski touring and avalanche safety, helping you build the knowledge and confidence to move more safely in the mountains. It's practical knowledge you take with you on future freeride and ski touring adventures.

The main focus of the weekend is getting your ski legs back and preparing for the season. If snow and weather conditions allow, you also have the option to spend a day with a local mountain guide and experience Monte Rosa's legendary freeride terrain. The freeride day is optional and costs €120 per person per day, and runs with a minimum of four participants.

We meet at our accommodation in the village of Campertogno during the day. If you fly into Milan Malpensa Airport and plan to rent a car, let us know before your trip. We'll help match you with other participants, so you can share the drive to the mountains and split the rental costs.

Maximum 24 participants.

We make high-quality content in all our camps. You will receive the photos after returning home to remember all the amazing memories.

Depending on your travel style, we recommend budgeting around €200–400 for personal expenses. A typical meal costs €15–25, while entry to the panoramic mountain sauna is around €15. If you plan to rent ski equipment or add an extra ski day, it's worth budgeting separately for those as well.

Absolutely incredible experience with GoBeyond so far! I joined on the snowboarding/freeriding trips to Japan & Georgia and both were unforgettable. Guides Jano, Levi & Charlie were so good, very knowledgeable, and friendly, ensuring you learn a lot along the way. I also liked the flexible planning of the trips, so it was always adjusted to i.e. the weather, the possible cultural challenges and the group(s). In addition to the riding, and the nice people I met, the food experience was phenomenal in both trips, offering a good taste of local delicious cuisine.

I’ve been on 3 trips with GoBeyond so far. Very satisfied, my trips to Chamonix, Tetnuldi (Georgia) and Lofoten (Norway) have been great. You get enough info before the trips, their customer service is really good and their guides are great. I particularly like to go skiing with Charlie, who is super professional. Thank you GoBeyond!

After researching for quite a while for freeride opportunities I was very lucky to discover GoBeyond travel. I’ve joined 2 trips so far: coming back from Italy camp, immediately signed up for another one in Lofoten. Both adventures were an unforgettable experience from start to finish really. Thanks to the guides, as a first time splitboarder I had an opportunity to push myself into the unknown territory but yet felt safe during the climb. Looking forward to the next snow and surf trips together and can very highly recommend GoBeyond to anyone seeking an adrenaline-pumping adventure

PROGRAM

5-day itinerary

Once everyone arrives, we settle into the villa, enjoy our first dinner together and go through the plan for the days ahead. The first mountain stories start flowing, maps come out, and it's not long before the conversation turns to tomorrow's skiing.

We spend the next three days skiing. Every morning, we decide whether to head towards Alagna, Gressoney or Champoluc based on the latest snow and weather conditions, so we always make the most of the mountain. During the day, we explore Monte Rosa's best runs, stop at our favourite mountain huts, or join an optional avalanche beacon practice session. Everyone is free to shape the day their own way, whether that means skiing with others from morning to afternoon or taking things at a slower pace. In the evenings, we come back together for relaxed workshops on ski touring and avalanche safety.

After breakfast, everyone wraps up the weekend at their own pace. If you can't get enough of Monte Rosa, you can grab an extra lift pass and spend one more day on the mountain. Or take it easy, wander through the streets of Alagna and enjoy one last espresso before heading home. Your ski legs are now ready for the season.

We reserve the right to change the program. The final program plan depends on the weather, snow conditions, ski/snowboard skills and stamina of the team.

FAQ

Not at all. Many participants join the trip solo, and it's a great way to meet like-minded people. If you prefer to have an apartment to yourself, just let us know when you sign up. Single accommodation is available for an additional fee, subject to availability.

If you're comfortable skiing red runs, you're ready for this weekend. You don't need any freeride experience, solid piste skiing skills and an interest in freeride are all you need. Alongside our days on the mountain, we spend the evenings covering the fundamentals of ski touring and avalanche safety, giving you a strong foundation for the rest of the season.

By December, Monte Rosa is in full winter mode. Sunshine, snowfall, strong winds and sub-zero temperatures are all part of the experience, so dressing in layers is the best approach. We recommend packing several thinner layers rather than relying on one heavy jacket.

The weekend is led by experienced GoBeyond tour leaders who have been returning to Monte Rosa for years. We know the mountain inside out from our favourite mountain huts to the hidden corners that most visitors never discover.

You need your ski or snowboard equipment, along with clothing suitable for high-altitude winter conditions. If you don't have your own gear, everything can be rented locally. Ski touring or splitboard equipment isn't necessary, as the main focus of the weekend is piste skiing and getting ready for the season. If you'd like to bring your touring setup or join the optional freeride day, feel free to pack it.

As meals are self covered, we recommend budgeting around €200–400, depending on your spending style. That's enough for breakfast at the local bakery, lunch in the mountain huts and dinner in one of Alagna's family-run trattorias, with room for a few coffees or a glass of prosecco along the way. If you plan to rent ski equipment, visit the panoramic mountain sauna or add an extra ski day, it's worth budgeting separately for those as well.

Choose travel insurance that covers winter sports in Italy. If you plan to join the optional freeride day, make sure your policy also includes off-piste skiing. Keep in mind that the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) and the travel insurance included with most bank cards are usually not sufficient.

We spend the entire weekend in Italy, based in Alagna Valsesia at the foot of Monte Rosa. Although Switzerland is just over the ridge, all of our activities take place on the Italian side.

Meals aren't included. You can prepare breakfast in the apartment or stop by the village bakery, we usually have lunch in one of the mountain huts, and in the evenings we often get together for dinner in Alagna's family-run trattorias.
