Description

Nestled at the foot of the 2,900-meter-high Dachstein glacier, Ramsau is the perfect starting point for families looking to hike, bike, climb mountains, or simply relax in the Alps. The itinerary is completely open, we schedule the ideal program according to the group’s interest.

An example of a perfect day

We had breakfast with a view of the south face of the Dachstein, then set off toward the glacier. We hop into the cabin, leaving behind the ski slopes, evergreen pines, and the warmth of summer. Reaching the glacier, we cross a suspension bridge, where we’re treated to stunning 360-degree views of Austria’s tallest peaks. We climb the “Stairway to Nowhere,” which leads to a glass-floored lookout, giving the kids a chance to test their courage with a 400-meter drop yawning beneath their feet.
After coming down from the glacier, we hike back home from the valley, stopping along the way at the best mountain huts for a homemade cheese platter or a slice of apple strudel.
In the evenings, we grill as the sun sets, accompanied by unfiltered Austrian craft beers, while the kids eagerly help around the fire. For those who enjoy a bit of competition, there’s foosball, or you can just relax as we plan the next day. Options include an e-bike tour through hills and valleys or even a via ferrata climb. Don’t worry if it sounds intimidating at first—beginners can also climb up the mountain on fixed iron cables, ladders, ropes, and other aids. There are plenty of beginner-friendly e-biking routes, too. The views and experience make it all absolutely worthwhile.

It started as a biathlon court, but ended up as a longboarder paradise

The summer cross-country ski training track built in the nearby forest is one of the most unique longboarding terrains in the world. It’s a traffic-free, mirror-smooth network of roads with banked turns, slopes, and hills, all winding through towering pine trees. Older kids can try out longboarding, while the smaller ones have the perfect terrain for balance bikes or scooters. Just a few minutes from the house, you can take a swim in the lake, play beach volleyball on the shore, and let little kids splash in the shallow water or enjoy the playground. There’s a summer toboggan and adventure park nearby, and advanced bikers can check out the Schladming bike park.

Program

5-day itinerary

A huge BBQ feast awaits you at the house on arrival. The following days your holiday will be exactly as active as you'd like it, you can choose from the following programs daily.

Trekking

There are endless options, from a one-hour, 3.5 km hike to a ten-hour, 30 km trek, with elevation gains reaching up to 2,000 meters. The breathtaking scenery spans snow-covered glaciers, pristine alpine lakes, meadows dotted with grazing cows, and dense pine forests. One of our favorite routes follows a canyon with bridges and steps, where kids can safely get acquainted with the basics of hiking while marveling at the surrounding cliffs and waterfalls.

Biking

Enduro and downhill options (with four major parks in the area). Road cycling (dozens of thrilling switchbacks within a 50 km radius of the house), and XC (singletrack and designated bike trails in the surrounding mountains).

Rock climbing / Klettersteig / Via Ferrata

A wide variety of sporty climbing routes on Dachstein's world-famous limestone. Numerous routes are available for climbers of all levels, from beginners to advanced, reaching up to 3,000 meters in altitude.

Rafting

Tours on the Enns River are available at various difficulty levels, ensuring everyone can find an experience suited to their skill level.

Skateboarding / longboarding

A glass-like concrete trail network in the middle of the forest with sharp bends and ups&downs. There’s nothing quite like it anywhere else, and it’s just a short walk—or skateboard ride—from the house. It’s the perfect terrain for young kids to learn or practice biking.

Mountain lake beach

A volleyball court, trampoline, diving tower, playground, and pizzeria by a small lakeside, just 5 minutes from the house.

Horseback riding

From the running shaft to the terrain obstacle course everything is available nearby.

Programs for kids

A mini forest adventure park, summer toboggan, playgrounds, barefoot park, zip-lining, beach, horseback riding, and plenty of animals and farms in the area: cows, rabbits, horses, deer, llamas, goats, piglets, and chickens...

The program is subject to change at any times. The final itinerary depends on weather conditions and the fitness and stamina of the team.

    FAQ

This trip is mainly intended for families. If you want to join one of our trips on your own, contact us so we can find the best adventure tour for you.

This is our most family-friendly trip! If you like to do outdoor activities in the mountain area, then this is your camp! For park skiing and snowboarding and downhill mountain biking the opportunities are world class.

Although it's summer you should expect very changeable weather. On the top of the Dachstein Glacier it might snow, but a real beach time can happen as well, in this case we'll sunbath next to the lake by the house.

It depends on what you're planning to do. If you want to ski, then you should have your equipment and the situation is the same in case of down hill mountain biking or climbing. You'll have the opportunity to rent equipment on sight, but we will also have some test gear with us.

This trip is suitable for all age groups, with programs designed to be diverse so that everyone can find the most exciting or relaxing options for themselves.

Just a few minutes' walk from the house, there’s a lake with shallow, enclosed water for the little ones, along with a playground, diving board, and trampoline for the older kids. From there, a lift takes you to the top of the hill opposite our accommodation, where a playground with stunning views awaits the children. The older kids (or smaller ones in strollers) can also hike back down via the "Fairy Tale Trail" (Märchenweg), and there are countless other hiking paths in the area. On rainy days, we often visit the local swimming pool or a nearby water park with slides. Close to the accommodation, there are several farms where children can meet rabbits, horses, piglets, goats, and kittens, typically accessible by foot or bike. Plus, we have a favorite restaurant with a garden featuring several inflatable bouncy castles to keep the kids entertained.

No worries. We handle the program schedule flexibly, taking into account the children's varying ages, personalities, and moods on any given day. Everyone is free to do what feels right and what they’re in the mood for.

Comfortable clothing, rain gear, sun-protective clothing, hiking shoes, and for biking or skateboarding, it’s a good idea to bring a bike and protective gear (elbow and knee pads, helmet, and possibly a back protector). Don’t forget swimwear and flip-flops! Toys can also come in handy, and for younger children, a baby monitor might be useful so you can leave the room with peace of mind. Additionally, it’s wise to have a basic medicine kit, but there’s also a pharmacy in the village if needed.

The accommodation provides a crib, baby bath, and high chair. Please bring anything else you might need. A microwave, refrigerator, and cooking facilities are available all day.

There’s a Billa and a Spar in town where you can typically find all the basic baby supplies. If you need a wider selection, the nearest drugstore is located in Schladming.

There is a local pharmacy and medical office nearby for minor issues, while emergency care is available at the Schladming Hospital, about a 15-minute drive away. In case of emergency, you can quickly reach the ambulance service using the local emergency number (144).

It really depends on what you’re planning to do, the ski pass and the lift ticket for mountain biking is not included in the price, and these are the biggest expenses. If you are willing to do everything, everyday (which is not possible :) ) than you should count with around €60/day.

You should choose an insurance which expands for the activities you’re planning to do. You should be aware that the blue EU health insurance card and the insurance of your bank card is not valid in most cases.

Our guide has been spending summers in the Alpine air since childhood and is a true local expert. They know the answer to every question and excitedly shares with the team the best spots for outdoor sports.

4 nights in a classic Austrian mountain house in rooms of 2, 3 or 4 people. The house has its own bar and community areas. Central location, 5 minutes from the trails, lake and other activities.

The local currency is euro. You can bring cash from home or there are several ATMS, for withdrawals. In most locations you can also pay by card.

For Austria most nationalities don’t need a visa.
