Description

This destination is suitable for the whole family: whether you have already surfed somewhere or are just trying it for the first time, this must be the place. An exciting adventure awaits you also if you would rather get to know the hidden treasures of Sri Lanka, full of amazing animals, magical landscapes and local mysteries that are waiting for you to discover.

Sri Lanka is famous for its tea plantations, its stunning rain forests, and its sandy beaches. But, there are also two distinct historical facts that have left a lasting mark on the island: one is the colonial architecture, the other is the thousands of yearsof Buddhist culture that continues to inspire the decorative flair of the island. Children learn about history and different cultures by visiting such places, which gives them an awesome base for understanding the world. The knowledge gained through experiences is much more permanent and helps them to remain open and curious about the world.

But it’s Sri Lanka’s natural landscape that makes this island country especially interesting. Along the way, we’ll visit Yala or Udawalawe National Park where we’ll spot elephants, buffaloes and even crocodiles! Another day we’ll jump on a boat and head out whale watching, and perhaps even spot some dolphins from right up close. We’ll also visit a local turtle farm, where they raise baby turtles – we can witness how they are released to their first journey to the sea.

Of course the itinerary won’t be too packed; we want to leave heaps of time to soak up the unique experiences that Sri Lanka has to offer even in our down-time. Take your time sipping coconut water on the beach or just sit back with a fruit bowl as you watch the waves crash onto the shore. Spending time here is the perfect opportunity to enjoy the days together and make lasting memories as a family.

Program

9-day itinerary

Day 1

Arrival

The group meets at the airport followed by a 2,5h private bus transfer to the Surf Lodge. Check-in, getting to know each other and the accommodation, dinner and drinks.

Day 2

Theory & first dip

After breakfast the first theoretical surf lesson begins, followed by our first group surf session on the beach. In the meantime non-surfers can play on the beach, build a sandcastle, or even jump in the waves. After everyone is sufficiently tired, we usually have lunch together at one of the coastal restaurants. In the afternoon, we stretch out our tired muscles with yoga, and then end the day in a pleasant restaurant with delicious food.

Day 3

Lake Koggala

Breakfast, morning surf session, lunch at the accommodation. In the afternoon, we embark on a boat trip on Lake Koggala to see some wildlife and spice production on three different islands, where we also catch up with the friendly local people. We have dinner at the accommodation and then head to Mirissa Beach for a bonfire party.

Galle

Optional program: After the morning surf session and lunch on the beach, in the afternoon we visit Galle to explore the fort and get an insight into colonial architecture. We have dinner at the best seafood restaurant in the area.

Day 5

Theory & tea

Thanks to the experience we've gained so far, we'll have enough confidence to have photos and videos taken of our surfing skills, so you will surely have some nice memories to last. This session is followed by another theoretical lesson, then lunch, yoga and in the late afternoon we visit the famous tea plantation of Handunugoda. After dinner we analyse the footage we made during the morning session.

Day 6

Buddhist culture

We head to the amazing Hiriketiya bay, where you can enjoy the beach and the waves. Then we hit an awesome lunch spot and head to Mulkirigala Rock Temple to learn about local culture. To finish up the day, we head to Midigama to let the steam out with a Cheeky Monkey Party.

Day 7

Fish market

Optional program: Rise and shine! Usual morning surf session followed by a visit at a secret beach close to Mirissa. Lunch at the Weligama fishmarket followed by yoga and an afternoon surf session. Dinner at the Lighthouse with epic sunset views of the ocean.

Day 8

Safari

Optional programs: Uduwella Safari in the morning or whale and dolphin watching. Based on the group’s decision we have our ‘regular’ schedule including morning surf afternoon chill and yoga or any of the extra programs. Our day ends in Weligama at an awesome tiki bar.

Day 9

Departure

We start our final day with a group meal followed by optional massage and spa treatments. Checkout from the hotel is around noon, then we head to the airport and return home with amazing new memories.

The program is subject to change at any times. The final itinerary depends on current weather conditions, swell, tidal movements, the group’s surfing skills and stamina.

Very well organized holiday. The lodge in Sri Lanka, Kabalana was also perfect where we stayed. Our tourguide Gaspar was very friendly and flexible to our needs. The surf instructors were also friendly and professional. I will for sure take part in one of the other adventures of GoBeyond in the near future as it was really beyond the standard.

Nikolett

I loved the balance between modern/fancy places and local things. I loved everything, really! 10/10 holiday. I had a really, really good time.

David

I liked everything, without exaggeration! The hikes, the sports, the accommodation, the company and Sri Lanka itself. 🙂 The camp could be two weeks. 🙂

Judith

One of the best holidays of my life! Smooth pre-communication with the organizing team, seamless arrival on the other side of the world, wonderful accommodation, divine weather, flawless organization. I arrived alone in Sri Lanka and left with 8 new friends. The island is a perfect blend of local culture experiences and western restaurants and cafes. I was surrounded by beautiful, kind people and even learned to surf a bit 🙂 Next year, same here!

    FAQ

Of course! At least half of the group always consists of beginners. We have found perfect conditions for beginners each year, and with the help of the professional instructors, you will be able to learn the basics very effectively. It is also a great spot for children who can swim confidently to start learning the basics of surfing.

Sri Lanka offers the best beginner and intermediate waves. Most likely you won’t find barrels, but there are also hollow waves breaking on shallow reefs and lots of forgiving and super fun reef breaks. If you’re not only focusing on very big waves you will have a great time!

We’re pretty sure that you’ll love surfing. At the same time the villages of Sri Lanka have a very chill vibe and enjoying the sun on a tropical beach is quite easy. On the other hand most of the group will surf at least half day every day, meaning we'll stay on the beach together going in and out of the water.

During the daytime it’s sunny, around 28-35°C, during the night it’s around 28 °C. The water is 28 °C. Board short, bikini, lycra (UV and rash protection) surf shirt is needed. Don’t forget the suncream and your hat at home!

A GoBeyond tour guide and professional local instructors with many years of experience.

The accommodation consists of modern luxurious boutique chalets for 2-4 people each. The small houses are located in a park of palm trees, with a pool and community area in the center.

This trip is primarily intended for families. If you want to join one of our trips on your own, contact us so we can find the best adventure tour for you.

Sri Lanka is a safe destination with children, but, as everywhere, it is worth paying attention to a few things. The local flora and fauna are extremely interesting, so it is important to closely supervise younger children in nature, especially when they are introduced to unknown plants or animals. Stronger waves can occur on the beaches, so children should never be left unattended in the water. The river water is neither drinkable nor suitable for brushing your teeth, so always have bottled water with you, which you can refill in many places. In general, the locals are very friendly with children and very welcoming to families.

This route is recommended for all ages, and the programs are varied accordingly, so that everyone can find the most exciting / relaxing options for them.

Sri Lanka is famous among beginner surfers, so motivated kids can try out the basics of surfing. Animal-friendly programs are also popular in the area: whale and dolphin-watching boat trips depart from nearby Mirissa, and many kinds of animals can be observed on Lake Koggala, such as crocodiles, monkeys, waterfowl, etc. Safari tours are also exciting: visitors can meet elephants, leopards, local bears and many other wild animals. But even without an organized program, there is enough excitement for children, for example, tuk-tuk trips are an eternal experience, and the calmer beaches in the area offer great relaxation.

No worries. We handle the program schedule flexibly, taking into account the children's varying ages, personalities, and moods on any given day. Everyone is free to do what feels right and what they’re in the mood for.

You should pack light, airy clothes, as the weather is very hot and humid. The most important thing is sun protection: a bathing suit, a sun protector top with UV filter, a sun hat, sunglasses and high-factor sun lotion should definitely be in your suitcase, and a hooded towel will come in handy at sunset. It is also worth packing inflatable arm floaties for the little ones. And for hiking, comfortable shoes come in handy in addition to slippers/sandals, and you should throw in a raincoat too. It is important to have a basic set of medicines with you: thermometer, fever reducer, anti-diarrhea preparation, mosquito repellent, adhesive plaster, etc. For smaller children, a baby monitor can be useful so that you can leave the room safely.

Feel free to write us what you need, and we will do our best to provide them with the help of our local team.

There are many places to buy diapers and baby food in Sri Lanka, such as major supermarkets Keells and Cargills. However, good quality diapers are not really available, so we recommend that you bring a few from home at least for the nights. In terms of food, there is usually a choice.

There are several local doctors' offices and pharmacies nearby, where you can get help in case of minor problems. You can also call a doctor to our accommodation, we usually recommend this in simpler cases. For emergency care, you can go to the nearest hospital, Matara Hospital, which is about a 30-minute drive from our accommodation. The local emergency number (1990) allows you to quickly reach the ambulance services.

It really depends on spending habits it’s possible to survive from $150. We recommend a budget range of $300-600. For reference, a meal is between $3-15, motorcycle rental $8-10, coconut $0,5, Safari and Whale watching $40-70. Also, you should calculate how many souvenirs you would like to buy.

The local currency is Sri Lankan Rupees LKR. You can only change money in banks at the airport and some small shops with your passport. First, it’s recommended to change some money at the airport, then we’ll go to a bank if you run out. You can only pay by card at our surf house, there are a few ATMs but withdraws have large extra charges so we recommend using cash.

It depends on your nationality, please always check it on your local embassy’s website. From most of the European countries, the price of the visa is $35 and you will need to fill out an online form before the arrival (http://www.eta.gov.lk/slvisa/).

Healthy fresh food, mostly based on seafood, chicken, rice and vegetables. You will get a buffet breakfast every morning and two community dinners. Coconuts are offered everywhere they are almost for free.

Tap water in Sri Lanka is OK for washing, but it is not recommended for drinking and brushing teeth. Bottled mineral water is cheap ($0,5) and available everywhere. Alternatively, there will be a purified water fountain at our surf hostel, where you can fill up your bottles and help keep plastic out of the ocean.

Please ask your local health authority. Usually, there are no mandatory vaccinations.

There is an OK level of hygiene, no stomach infection has occurred in the last years as the foods are healthy and clean. It’s always a good idea though to keep a hand sanitizer in your bag.
