Description

Our five-day adventure tour is an optional add-on for those who aren’t ready to head home right after our Sri Lanka surf camp and would rather explore more of the island. When the scent of tea replaces the waves, the ocean blue gives way to jungle green, and surf sessions turn into hikes and yoga.

We spend two nights at a community tea, coffee, and spice farm, where we learn about eco-farming, explore the surrounding valleys on foot, take in stunning views, and join yoga, tastings, or even a cooking class for those who wish.

Next, we set off on one of the world’s most beautiful train journeys, leaning out of open doors as we ride across viaducts above tea plantations and through mountain villages. By evening, we arrive in Nuwara Eliya – a step back into the British colonial era, complete with afternoon tea and cozy fire-lit bars.

An elephant sanctuary awaits us as well, where rescued and orphaned animals live in peace and safety. We wrap up the trip on Sri Lanka’s West Coast, with one final sunset framed by palm trees.

Accommodations

Throughout the trip, we stay in three different accommodations. For the first two nights, we are based at an organic farm and guesthouse run by a local community in Uva Province, nestled in a small valley with views of Ella Rock and Lipton’s Seat. Our hosts produce handcrafted teas, coffees, and spices, while collaborating with the community on educational, economic, and environmental initiatives.

Next, we stay at an elegant hotel overlooking the city of Nuwara Eliya, transporting us back to the British colonial era. On the final night, we stay near Negombo Beach, enjoying one last stunning orange sunset over the Indian Ocean.

We spend two days on an organic tea farm, hiking, practicing yoga, cooking, and, of course, tasting plenty of tea. Then we ride one of the world’s most beautiful train routes, leaning out of open doors to take in rolling green hills, viaducts, and tiny villages. Our destination is Nuwara Eliya, the colonial-era town at 1,860 metres where time seems to stand still. We visit an ethical elephant orphanage, meeting baby elephants and their caretakers. On our final evening, we soak up the tropical ocean breeze one last time.

In the central highlands, the air is cool and fresh, and you may need a sweater in the evenings. Along the coast, expect warm, sunny days.

The trip is open to a maximum of 10 people from our Sri Lanka Surf Camp who choose to extend their tropical escape with a mountain adventure. It’s a great way to discover Sri Lanka’s greener, cooler, and more tranquil side before heading home.

We capture high-quality photos throughout the trip. You receive them after returning home, so you can always remember these amazing moments.

The local currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). We recommend bringing US dollars, which you can exchange at the airport. Depending on your spending habits, we suggest carrying 100–150 USD in cash. Meals typically cost between 3–15 USD.

Food in Sri Lanka is a true adventure: every meal bursts with fresh ingredients, aromatic spices, and bold flavors. We dine at teahouses and laid-back local spots, with a coastal lunch and a highlands dinner that stand out as unforgettable experiences. A hearty breakfast is provided at all accommodations.

We travel with private transfers throughout the trip and take the train from Ella to Nuwara Eliya. Short journeys are done by tuk-tuk, while longer routes are covered in air-conditioned minibuses.

All travelers must have valid travel insurance for Sri Lanka.

Program

5-day itinerary

Day 1-2

Tea Plantations, Yoga & Chill

We spend two days in one of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful regions, at a secluded organic tea farm in the stunning highlands. Mornings begin with yoga, followed by gentle hikes, tea tastings, and local cooking workshops. The hosts’ hospitality and wholesome vegetarian meals leave us refreshed in body and spirit.

Day 3

Train from Ella to Nuwara Eliya

We ride the train from Ella, passing tea-lined hills and highland villages on one of the world’s most scenic rail journeys, arriving in Nuwara Eliya by evening. Our overnight stay is in the town’s iconic colonial-style hotel.

Day 4

Elephant Sanctuary

On the way to the coast, we stop at the country’s only ethical elephant orphanage, meeting baby elephants and observing their feeding and washing. That night, we stay at a seaside hotel near the airport, enjoying one last orange sunset over the Indian Ocean.

Day 5

Farewell & Journey Home

Transfers take everyone to the airport according to their flight, and we head home with unforgettable memories and lasting friendships.

*We reserve the right to make program changes. The final itinerary depends on current weather conditions and the group’s endurance.

    FAQ

In the highlands, the climate is cooler and fresh: daytime temperatures range from 18–24 °C, while mornings and evenings can drop to 12–15 °C. Along the coast, it stays warm and tropical. Bring light summer clothes, but for the mountains, a sweater, long pants, and a light jacket come in handy. Comfortable shoes are recommended for hiking.

A GoBeyond tour guide leads the trip.

We stay in a variety of high-quality places: an authentic organic tea farm, a grand colonial hotel, and a seaside hotel with ocean-view rooms and balconies.

Not at all. There are always other solo travelers, and you can count on finding new friendships.

You can get by on $10–20 per day if you eat at local restaurants and don’t buy many souvenirs. If you’d like more coffee breaks, extra activities, or shopping, plan a bit more. Entrance fees and most activities are already included in the trip price.

The local currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). You can exchange money at banks, at the airport, or in a few small shops with your passport. We recommend exchanging at the airport, and if needed, we can stop at a bank during the trip. Some places accept cards, and there are a few ATMs, but withdrawal fees are high, so cash is best.

Most nationalities require a visa to enter Sri Lanka. It is easy to apply online, and the cost is 50 USD.

Eating in Sri Lanka is an experience in itself: fresh ingredients, bold spices, and colorful dishes. Vegetarian options are plentiful — rice, curries, coconuts, and exotic fruits. On the trip, we mix it up with tea ceremonies, elegant dinners, and relaxed seaside meals.

You can use tap water for washing dishes, but it’s not safe to drink or use for brushing your teeth. Bottled water is inexpensive (around half a dollar) and widely available.

We cannot give official advice on vaccinations, as each traveler’s medical history and health determine what shots may be needed. We consult the National Vaccination Center, but any similar health authority is suitable. No vaccinations are mandatory.

Hygiene standards are good, and in recent years, there have been no cases of stomach infections because the food is fresh, healthy, and clean. It’s a good idea to carry hand sanitizer with you. Being a tropical country, mild digestive issues can occur, so bringing probiotics or activated charcoal tablets can be helpful.
