Description

Among the galloping antelopes and zebras on the savannah, we ride Royal Enfield Himalayan motorcycles around Africa’s highest mountain, Kilimanjaro, on the finest off-road terrains. As we adventure along the dusty roads of the seemingly endless landscape, hidden oases, lakes, and waterfalls cross our path, providing relief. By the afternoon, we arrive at the best authentic African-style lodges around Kilimanjaro and experience the unparalleled hospitality of the locals.

We visit Arusha National Park, where on our safari tour, we can marvel at East Africa’s wildlife up close and enjoy the company of wildebeests, rhinos, giraffes, and elephants. We also explore Lake Natron, a favorite gathering spot for flamingos, pelicans, and marabou storks.

Following our mainland adventure, we take a flight to Zanzibar, where we explore Stone Town, reflecting a unique blend of Arab, Persian, Indian, and European cultural elements. The next day, we get back in the saddle to explore the island and the surrounding turquoise ocean on motorcycles.

On our last evening, we relax on the deck of a catamaran, a cold drink in hand, admiring the ocean sunset while recalling the most memorable moments of the tour.

We will also explore the landscapes around Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar on Royal Enfield Himalayan motorbikes, with a total of 7 days of motorbike rental included in the package. Motorcycle tour guides with extensive local knowledge, mechanics, and a support vehicle are also included in the price, as well as daily engine maintenance. Fuel is covered by each rider, which will certainly cost less than €100 per bike. In total, we will ride about 1100 kilometers.

Advanced motorcycle skills: can ride for six to eight hours, comfortable with any terrain and weather conditions. No experience is required for pillions or for those who travel in a backup car.

Daytime temperatures usually reach 32°C with high humidity, falling to 23°C at night.

We marvel at Kilimanjaro from East Africa's best off-road trails and get to know Tanzania's unique lifestyle, culture, and cuisine. We encounter wildlife such as wildebeests, zebras, and giraffes in the untouched nature. In Zanzibar, we ride motorcycles, snorkel, and sail on a catamaran, enjoying the island's stunning landscapes.

You will need insurance that covers motorcycle riding and is valid in Tanzania and Zanzibar. You can contact us and we are happy to recommend the most suitable one.

The package includes three meals per day on the day of arrival and on the safari tour, and breakfast and dinner on the mainland motorcycle tour (on these days, lunches are arranged en route, individually). On the days in Zanzibar, breakfast is included in the package; the rest of the meals are arranged individually, except for the last evening all-inclusive catamaran trip.

We ride on dusty dirt roads, gravel, rocky, sandy, and forest trails, up and down hills. We only ride a bit on public roads, but there you can expect the worst traffic norms to prevail.

Every rider must bring his own motorcycle protective gear and helmet. We do not recommend wearing leather motorbike suits as we do not go fast on the bikes and we will have mostly warm weather. We strongly recommend bringing good protective top gear, a durable high top riding boot and a helmet. Don’t forget about your rain clothes, as we will have some rain showers.

GoBeyond’s official motorbike gear partner is FUEL, gear up for Tanzania on their site with the special discount code for our guests.

There is a maximum of fourteen mixed-nationality riders per support team (van, mechanic, and guides). One tour can accommodate a maximum of two teams.

We make high-quality content in all our camps. You will receive the photos after returning home to remember all the amazing memories.

The local currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). We recommend bringing USD in cash and to exchange at the airport. Depending on spending habits your budget for the trip should range from $300-600. For reference, a meal is between $5-10.

Program

11-day itinerary

Day 1

Arrival

Arrival in Arusha, Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO), from where a transfer takes us to our Bauhaus-style villa. Acclimatisation, followed by a pleasant African dinner.

Day 2

Safari

With a full-day safari experience, we continue to get used to the climate and speed of life in Africa. Arusha National Park boasts a range of landscapes, including lakes, savannahs, mountain forests, rivers, waterfalls, and a dormant volcano that rises 4,562 meters above the park's floor and serves as the park's crowning feature.

Day 3

Pick up the bikes & start the tour

A quick practice day to get comfortable with the bikes. After leaving Arusha, we travel on the south side of Kilimanjaro while enjoying views of the mountain via freshly paved and gravel roads. After stopping at a secret oasis for a swim and lunch, we hike up to our lodging on the mountainside, where we can end the day with views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Day 4

Kilimanjaro National Park

We are accompanied by the sight of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks on our journey. We get to know the Chagga people, who are the protectors and guardians of the mountain. In the Kilimanjaro National Park, we can wash off the dust of the road in a 75-meter waterfall.

Day 5

Mountain of God

A typical dusty African road, lined with grazing wildebeests, zebras, giraffes, and antelopes, leads us to the town of Longido. We take a look at Ol Doinyo Lengai, or the Mountain of God, before arriving at Lake Natron, the mating ground of the flamingos.

Day 6

Back to Arusha

Zebras, antelopes, and herds of wildebeest accompany us as we return to Arusha across steep terrain. We spend the evening relaxing in our Bauhaus villa, bidding farewell to the savannah.

Day 7

Towards Zanzibar

After breakfast, we board a plane and head towards the Spice Island, Zanzibar. On the island, we spend the first day exploring Stone Town, a place of outstanding historical and artistic significance, where we discover a previously unknown side of Tanzania.

Day 8-9

Oldschool motorbike tour on the island

We again take to the saddle of Royal Enfields to explore the island at our own pace with complete freedom. If we feel like it, we can enjoy the white sandy beaches in the shade of palm trees, snorkel in the turquoise waters, or just get a massage and eat well. These two days are really all about easy cruising.

Day 10

Catamaran ride

We roll back to Stone Town, where we say goodbye to Enfields and head to the harbor to enjoy the rest of the day and the sunset from the deck of a catamaran. In the evening, we return to Stone Town for our last night.

Day 11

Flying home

Transfer to Zanzibar airport, return home.

The program is subject to change at any times. The final itinerary depends on current weather conditions and the endurance of the group.

I loved motorcycling alongside wildlife, as well as touring Zanzibar by ourselves. And of course the company.

For me, riding a motorbike on the savannah with the animals was an experience of a lifetime. And I really liked Levi, he is very nice and helpful. He made sure that everyone was having a good time and that everything was okay.

    FAQ

Not at all. The accommodations usually have 2-3 people in each room, so you'll probably get a cool roommate, but if you want to sleep alone, let us know when you apply, and we'll work something out for you.

To enter Tanzania from most countries, you need a visa, which costs $50 and is very easy to apply for online. Flying from the mainland to Zanzibar is considered domestic travel, so no visa is required. Be sure to check your embassy's website.

We are motorcycling in Tanzania and on the Indian Ocean coast on the island of Zanzibar, a semi-autonomous territory of Tanzania.

You need to have a motorcycle driving license valid for a 500cc motorbike (at least).

You can sit into the back-up van and enjoy totally the same trip while saving €200. Also you will have the chance to sit and ride on the bike behind our guides or if you come together with a rider you can also sit on the back of the bike for most part of the trip.

Every rider must bring his own motorcycle protective gear and helmet. We do not recommend wearing leather motorbike suits as we do not go fast on the bikes and we will have mostly warm weather. We strongly recommend bringing good protective top gear, a durable high top riding boot and a helmet. Don't forget about your rain clothes, as we will have some rain showers.

The guides provide helmets if necessary, but obviously these ones are used and not from the highest quality. We recommend you bring your own one! It is your decision what kind of a helmet you prefer, but you need to be prepared for defending yourself against very strong sunshine rain, mud and a lot of dust.

We will ride mostly on dirt roads. There will be parts with straight, smooth concrete roads, but this is not typical, we'll mostly ride off-road. You need to be prepared for bumps, river crossings, mud, sand, grass, gravel, lots of curves and anything you can imagine.

It is not safe to drink tap water in Tanzania. In fact, it is advisable to use tap water only for showering or washing your hands. To avoid health problems, use only bottled or filtered water for drinking and brushing your teeth. If you follow the usual health and hygiene rules the chance of getting sick is minimal. However, if anyone feels unwell, he/she can sit in the back-up car. From this point, one of the guides will ride his/her bike for a while.

Yes, thanks to local guides, we will know when and where to refuel. Fuel is not included in the price of the trip, and although it depends on your driving style, the route of the tour will certainly not require more than €100 in total. We will be driving approximately 1100 km, and the Royal Enfields will consume on average 4 liters per 100 km.

The staff contains the following people: a professional English-speaking guide grown up in Tanzania (he can ride anybody's bike if anything goes wrong, and he takes care of any upcoming issues); an amazingly kind mechanic; and at least one group leader from the GoBeyond team who is experienced in motorcycle guiding and the local culture and sights.

You need to pack at least 2 bags. The big bag travels in or on the back-up van so don't bring your expensive suitcases (you can repack them everyday in the accommodation), and a backpack with extra layers, water, camera and any personal items will be carried by you.

We cannot give official advice on vaccinations because each passenger's individual medical history, physical condition, etc. determines what vaccinations they do or do not need. We used to consult with the local vaccination center. There is no compulsory vaccination for people coming from Europe, but for those coming from African countries, yellow fever vaccination might be compulsory.

Depending on your spending habits, your budget for the trip should range from $500 to $700. For reference, a meal is between $10 and $15.

The local currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). We recommend bringing USD in cash and to exchange at the airport. ATMs and credit card payments are not typical, so we suggest bringing cash (USD) and changing at the beginning of the trip.

You'll need to have one that is valid for motorcycling, valid in Tanzania. If you need help, please get in touch with us!

In Arusha, we spend three nights in a unique Bauhaus-style villa. During the motorbike tour around Kilimanjaro, we will stay three nights in African lodges. In Zanzibar, we will spend 2 nights in Stone Town in an authentic hotel, and for 2 nights we will stay in oceanfront resorts.

You shouldn't worry, the back-up van with the mechanic is always the last one on the road, just park your bike on the side of the road, wait for him and enjoy the stunning scenery while he repairs your bike. Usually he can fix anything within 15 mins. The head of the group will wait for you at the next resting stop.

Sometimes. :) At least in the hotels in Arusha and Zanzibar, you’ll have proper connection.
